Together again. 🌱

With welcome messages from school leadership, introductions to our new faculty and staff, updates from various departments and divisions, a Meeting for Worship, and a reception with the Board of Trustees, we made space to reconnect, listen, reflect, and share time together during this week’s Opening Meetings.

🌱 Please join us in welcoming the newest members of the SSFS community!

We are excited to introduce our new faculty and staff for the 2026–27 school year. They bring fresh ideas, experiences, and perspectives, along with a shared commitment to supporting our students as they learn and grow!

As we begin the year together, we look forward to strengthening connections, and continuing to nurture a where everyone is valued and encouraged to bring their whole selves. If you see these new faces around campus, please be sure to say hello and offer them a warm SSFS welcome!

🏗️ Take a look at what is taking shape over at our Middle School!

Our construction projects continue to move forward this summer as we prepare to welcome our community back to SSFS. The Middle School HVAC work has been going well, and units are scheduled to be installed next week. The finishing touches are on the horizon, and an exciting year is ahead! Meet Brooke Carroll ’83 P’20, our incoming Head of School!

As Sandy Spring Friends School begins its next chapter, we are excited to welcome Brooke back to the community she knows so well. An alumna, parent, and former SSFS staff member, Brooke brings deep personal connections to our school alongside decades of experience in independent school leadership, administration, and governance.

Brooke will officially begin her headship in January 2027. Until then, Meredith Shankle will serve as Acting Head of School, providing continuity while supporting Brooke as she prepares to step into the role.

🚣‍♂️ Ready, set, row!

Our beautiful campus pond gets plenty of use during the , and last Friday it became the setting for some seriously creative team boat races during Summer at Sandy Spring.

Led by SSFS teacher and Camp Program Leader Laura Heninger, campers designed and built their own boats from makeshift materials before putting them to the test.

🎓 We are excited to share that our very own Chris Miller, Director of College Counseling at Sandy Spring Friends School, will be presenting as part of Goucher College's Summer College Preparation Webinar Series.

Join Chris next Tuesday, August 11, from 7–8 p.m. ET for Creating a Common App Account, a webinar designed to help students and families confidently begin the college application process. Participants will learn how to set up a Common App account, navigate the application, stay organized, and take the first steps toward submitting a strong college application.

Recognized in 2023 as one of the "Counselors That Change Lives," Chris brings more than 25 years of college admission and counseling experience to this informative session.

New and returning students, families, and faculty-staff gathered for a fun-filled Summer Social event featuring dinner, games, laughter, and swimming in the campus pond! It was the perfect way to reconnect with familiar faces, welcome new members of our community, and begin building friendships before the first day of school.

We're grateful for moments like these that remind us what makes SSFS so special. Here's to a wonderful school year ahead!
