As part of our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, our 6th and 7th Grade students gathered in the Library today for a special presentation and Read-Aloud exploring the life, music, and legacy of Argentine cultural icon Mercedes Sosa.

Led by Global Languages Department Head and Spanish Teacher Eduardo P., the presentation offered students a window into Argentine culture through music, storytelling, cultural objects, and, of course, a taste of dulce de leche-filled alfajores and bombones. Students also listened to Mercedes Sosa’s music before hearing Aixa Pérez-Prado’s picture book Mercedes Sosa: Voice of the People.

Eduardo also shared his own family’s connection to Argentina, creating a meaningful opportunity for students to think about how heritage can travel across borders and generations.

At the heart of the presentation was a simple question inspired by Sosa’s powerful voice: What will you use your own voice for?

As Eduardo told the students, “You don’t have to become a famous singer to use your voice. Every one of you has a voice. And every one of you gets to decide how you will use it.”

A fitting reflection for our SSFS community and a beautiful reminder to Let Your Life Speak!

Update Wed., Oct 7: We are so happy and relieved to share that Dilan has been found and is reunited with his family! Thank you to everyone for your care, concern, and assistance in the search efforts!

SSFS is closely following updates regarding Dilan Ashar, a University of Maryland student and graduate of SSFS (Class of 2022), who has been reported missing.

As shared in the UMD Investigative Update page - https://umpdnews.umd.edu/investigative-update-critical-missing-student-case - police and family are asking for the help of the community, especially anyone who was in UMD-College Park area following his disappearance after 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 2:

Helping can include resharing information and photos on your social media channels, or reviewing your camera footage from your residence and/or from your vehicle. If you own a business, review your camera footage and post the flyer in your establishment. Last Friday, our community came together for our Fall All-School Pep Rally, welcoming our fall teams, cheering through the "Crazy Pants Game," and wrapping things up with a faculty and staff vs. student soccer showdown!

What a wonderful evening celebrating the creativity of our SSFS !

Last night’s Community Art Show opening brought together an incredible collection of artwork across a wide range of media and creative practices. Just as meaningful as the artwork itself was the opportunity for artists to share the stories, ideas, and personal processes behind their work.

The exhibition will remain on view in the PAC Lobby through December 2. We hope you’ll stop by, explore the collection, and take in the many creative voices that make up our SSFS community!

It has been a sweet time of year at SSFS! Following our first Middle School affinity group gathering for the High Holy Days, members of our Upper School recently came together to build the SSFS Community Sukkah in front of Pen Y Bryn.

Sukkot began at sundown on Friday, September 25, and concludes at sundown tomorrow, Friday, October 2. Designed and built by recent graduate Alex L. ’25 as his senior passion project, the sukkah was donated to SSFS as a space for Jewish students and community members to gather during Sukkot for years to come.

More than a place for meals, prayer, and reflection, the sukkah is an invitation to gather. As Alex shared, he hoped it would become “a space for the entire SSFS community,” where different cultures, faiths, and identities can come together and share in the joy of belonging.

There has been a lot happening in our Performing Arts Center lately! Earlier this month, the PAC hosted our annual Donor Celebration: A Night of Impact, bringing our together to shine a light on the generosity of our Sandy Spring Friends School donors.

Through an inspiring showcase of student talent across the arts, athletics, and academics, we saw firsthand the many possibilities that philanthropy helps make possible at SSFS.

To everyone who supported our students and School last year, thank you for being part of our story!

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for October 20, when we’ll come together again for Friends Day of Giving: Run with the Herd! We can’t wait to see what we accomplish together. 💚

There is something special about gathering our whole SSFS together under one roof!

This morning’s All School Assembly brought us together through music, dance, reflection, student voices, and a celebration of and the year ahead. The morning ended with one of our favorite traditions: coming together to sing (and playfully stomp) the George Fox Song!

A huge thank you to everyone who participated, performed, and helped make this morning so special. The Traditions Committee and Peace Committee are grateful for the many hands and hearts that made it possible.

It takes an amazing village, Friends. 💚
