Big thank you to KW Marketing & Design, LLC for my new logo!!

The hummingbird is a personal touch inspired by my grandma. 💜💜

Hummingbirds remind me of her, and including one felt like a meaningful way to bring a little of her into something I’m building. Hummingbirds can symbolize mindfulness, joy and sweetness, resilience and adaptability. It felt like a pretty perfect match to me.

One thing I think we forget sometimes:

An accommodation is only helpful if the student can actually access and use it.

Having “speech-to-text,” “visual supports,” “breaks,” “scribe,” or “extended time” written in a plan doesn’t automatically mean the support is working.

Sometimes the better questions are:

Is it being used consistently?
Does the student know how to use it?
Does it actually address the barrier?
And most importantly… is it helping the student participate more independently and successfully?

Support should never just live on paper. 💛

📋IEP QUALITY & MONITORING READINESS REVIEW ✅

Is your district preparing for cyclical monitoring or looking to strengthen the overall quality and consistency of its IEPs?

KIND now offers a focused review and consultation service designed to help special education leaders:

• Identify patterns, gaps, and potential compliance concerns
• Improve consistency across buildings and teams
• Strengthen the alignment between evaluation data, eligibility, goals, services, and progress monitoring
• Prepare proactively for cyclical monitoring
• Develop practical next steps without adding more to your team’s already-full plate

This is not about finding fault. It’s about providing an experienced, objective perspective and helping districts feel confident that their IEPs are compliant, individualized, and educationally meaningful.

Reviews can be customized based on district needs and may include a targeted sample of IEPs, written findings, leadership consultation, staff support, and recommendations for improving systems and practices.

📚 Parents: You Don’t Have to Navigate the IEP Process Alone

Parents are important members of their child’s IEP team!

Parents… you are allowed to invite someone to support you during the process. This may be a trusted friend, family member, advocate, or professional with knowledge or special expertise regarding your child.

A support person can help you:

✅ Review evaluation reports and IEP paperwork
✅ Understand the data and recommendations
✅ Organize your questions and concerns
✅ Take notes during the meeting
✅ Feel more confident and informed

Illinois law also requires schools to provide parents with copies of the written materials that will be considered at an eligibility or IEP review meeting at least three school days before the meeting in most circumstances.

Please, take time to review the information. Ask questions. Request clarification when something doesn’t make sense. You are not being difficult, you are participating as an informed member of your child’s team.

Having someone knowledgeable by your side can make a meaningful difference. KIND offers parent consultation and IEP support to help families understand the information, prepare for meetings, and advocate confidently for their child.

A little change of plans for KIND Corner!

You voted on our first topic: My child is struggling… how long should I wait before reaching out?

Instead of going Live tonight, I decided to turn it into something you can save, share, and come back to when you need it.

Because the answer really is… it depends. 🤪

🟢 Sometimes we give it a little time.
🟡 Sometimes it’s time to start a conversation.
🔴 And sometimes we don’t wait.

Here’s a quick guide to help you know the difference.

I’m still figuring out exactly what KIND Corner will look like, but the goal will always be the same. I want to make all the confusing school stuff a little easier for parents to navigate. 💛

📚 The votes are in! 📚

Last week I asked what you wanted to talk about during the first KIND Corner Live: Ask a School Psych, and we had a clear winner:

“My child is struggling… how long should I wait before reaching out?”

The first few weeks of school can be bumpy. New teachers, routines, expectations and schedules can take some getting used to.

But when do you give it time and when is your gut telling you it’s time to speak up?

We’ll cover:
🟢 What may be normal back-to-school adjustment
🟡 Signs it’s time to start a conversation
🔴 When I wouldn’t recommend waiting
📊 What to ask the school
📝 Interventions, evaluations, 504s and IEPs: where do you even start?!

See you on Sunday!! 💛

💙 KIND Corner 💙

July 1st is basically the "Sunday Scaries" of summer.

Yesterday it felt like summer had just begun...

Today it's somehow JULY 🤯, and suddenly everyone is talking about:
✏️ school supplies
🍎 teacher assignments
⚽ fall sports
📅 calendars
…and where exactly June went

If you're a parent, educator, or have school-aged kids, you may notice something else this month...

Kids often start asking questions about the upcoming school year:
"Who will my teacher be?"
"Will my friends be in my class?"
"What if it's harder this year?"

Sometimes those questions come out as excitement.

Sometimes they come out as tears, frustration, clinginess, or "I don't want summer to end." 🥺

The good news? That's completely normal.

A few gentle reminders as we head into the second half of summer:

☀️ Let them soak up summer while they still can.

💛 If worries come up, listen first and reassure second.

🗓️ Ease back into routines gradually a week or two before school starts.

🌱 Remind them (and yourself) that they've successfully navigated new school years before.

For now...there are still popsicles to eat, pools to swim in, and memories to make.

August can wait a little longer. ❤️

What's one thing your family still wants to do before the school year begins?
