Hey everyone! We had a lot of people asking about the best HG to start on this year at the GurdyWorld Workshop & Retreat. Here's an updated rundown of our thoughts - of course there's lots of information on gurdyworld.com to help you with a full list and explanation.

#1 beginner - NG Basic - The NG Basic is still the best in class beginner instrument for price and speed of delivery (especially if you switch out the trompette string to a real gut string).

#1 overall - Zwingmann Alpha - If you can wait a little bit - Alex's Alpha is by the far the best gurdy for the money. It's unbelievably well constructed, it sounds amazing, and it's compact enough to fit in the overhead on an airplane with no issues. Sound samples are available on his website, but the ones I've seen from my students - I'm sold! Also, during the workshop we had one student that wanted to chat to him to order one and he was available immediately to help with all her questions. This instrument is top notch for beginners to intermediate to pros.

Still great....

KNYS Catnip B - It's still a great purchase, but the waitlist is very long.

Sedo Garcia VR-Sirena - Amazing quality and sound, this instrument will not only be a great beginner instrument for you but last well into your intermediate stage.

Don't want to watch a 7 minute dance? Here's the speedy version that takes less than a minute to watch. Thank you SJT!

GurdyWorld 2026 Workshop & Retreat is over for this year! We had so many people sign up I had to close registration early.

Thank you everyone for being so amazing!!!

Max Enloe with the beginners and maintenance, Steve Tyler teaching special classes, Iseut and Pascal teaching the dances, participants being extra amazing, loving and supportive. Yours truly had a broken ankle (hence the giant black boot in all the pics and videos) and everyone was so helpful for me, especially Shelby Trevor who helped out with the dances and ferrying loads of equipment and things back and forth.

Next year we are planning the retreat for August 22-26th, 2027 - so please put it on your calendar and once I have the registration forms and information ready in January 2027 I will let everyone know!

Here's our serious and silly group photos for this year...look at all those wonderful gurdy peeps!

Thank you to everyone that participated in the GurdyWorld 2026 Workshop & Retreat. We had a record number of participants from all over North America, and had to close registration early because of the interest! Woooo! Go Team.

So many great memories were made, and it was just an amazing collection of human beings.

Here's a little snippet on one of our two dance nights! Steve Tyler on gurdy, me on piano, Shelby Trevor on violin.
