Sandusky Selected for National Child Health Initiative

The City of Sandusky and the Toledo metropolitan area have been selected as one of only four communities nationwide to participate in a new federal initiative focused on improving children’s health and preventing chronic disease.

The Great Health for America pilot program is a two-year, $32 million national effort led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The initiative will bring additional resources, public health expertise and community partnerships to the selected communities.

The initiative will bring together schools, families, healthcare providers, public health organizations and community partners to identify ways to help children grow up healthier and stronger.
A major focus will be children’s nutrition and access to nutritious foods, including efforts to strengthen school meals and local food resources. The program will also explore other community-based strategies that encourage healthy habits and help prevent chronic health conditions.

The program will use local data to help communities understand what is working and make adjustments along the way. The goal is to identify solutions that can make a meaningful difference for children and families — not only in Sandusky, but potentially in communities across the country.

Sandusky City Schools is excited about the possibilities this initiative could bring to our students and families. We look forward to learning more about the program and exploring opportunities to partner with local organizations to support the health, wellness and success of our students.

More information about local participation and opportunities will be shared as details become available.
