It's rare for a freshman to qualify to the National Tournament, but that's just what Aubrey Amon from the Class of 2023 did!

As our final qualifier this year, this is our final reminder that our team's trip to Nationals can only happen with your support!!! eastmountainhigh.net/speechnationals

"Qualifying to nationals in congressional debate means everything to me, but more specifically, this experience falls under three main categories in my mind: once, a dream, now, an achievement, and soon, an opportunity. When I first entered EMHS, I was astounded that such a feat of qualifying was possible. Every time some future-planning worksheet asked us to “list our goals,” qualifying for nationals was always at the top of my list. Yet, now that I’ve managed to do just that, I see it as more than just a dream. It is also a wonderful success, a culmination of everything I’ve done so far in speech and debate. Every night I’ve stayed up late, every speech I’ve written, every question I’ve asked, has led up to this. Many feelings rushed through my brain when I heard my name called at the NatQuals awards ceremony: shock, happiness, excitement, gratitude, but most of all, accomplishment. Qualifying to nationals has shown me that my work hasn’t been all for nothing, and that I have a strong future through speech and debate. Now, however, as the clock counts down to the day I’ll arrive in Dallas, I see this most as an opportunity. There, I’ll be able to speak my mind in front of tons of people, to share my opinion on a wide range of topics. I’ll also be able to hear a variety of new viewpoints and develop a better world view. I’ll be making friends, making points, and hopefully making waves in the world of congressional debate. Qualifying to the national tournament started as a dream, but has now evolved into a wonderful reality. "

"I feel honored to represent New Mexico in Big Questions Debate, the newest Speech and Debate offered at the National Tournament. Qualifying to Nationals as a sophomore feels like an amazing payoff to two years of hard work. I’m excited to attend this tournament with my team, to learn from the best competitors around the country, and to come back next year with even more developed skills!"

"To me Speech and Debate means hard work, long weeks of prep followed by long/fun weekends, learning to use your voice, and teamwork. Speech and Debate has taught me that putting in the extra work will pay off in the end and what it means to be part of a team and family. I have learned that you should use your voice for two things: to say what needs to be said to make a difference and to always build up and support your team. By going to nationals I hope to not only gain more skills by competing along some of the best in the nation but also meet new people that I otherwise would never have gotten the chance to meet and grow from. This experience is one that will develop me into not only a better debater but a well- rounded person as I listen to those in my generation who know what it means to use your voice."

"Throughout my three years of high school, Speech and Debate has been the most rewarding experience I’ve had. Travelling with my team is my favorite thing to do, so I was elated to have qualified for the National Tournament for a second year in a row with some of my best friends. This tournament is challenging and exhausting, but in the best kind of way. Representing New Mexico on a national level with students from across the nation is simply just fun, and I can’t wait for a whole week of it. Junior year has been hard, but I can’t think of a better way to end it."

"When you’re from a small town in a small state, people might not think you would be a particularly interesting person. But Speech and Debate has taught me to think outside those expectations and that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Qualifying to my third national tournament with my team is a dream come true and another step toward solidifying New Mexico’s reputation on a national stage. I can’t wait to succeed in tandem with my teammates at nationals and am truly inspired and grateful for the opportunities and life skills this program has given me for the future."

"I am so fortunate to have the opportunity for the third year in a row to represent my state in Congressional Debate. As a senior, I have found comfort in public speaking. I joined Speech and Debate to follow in my sister’s footsteps, and now four years later, I will return to the same city my sister finished her debate career in. I have learned to work hard in and out of the classroom for my success. Being part of this program in itself is a truly amazing experience and being selected to represent my state and be recognized on a National level is even more special and something I hold near to my heart."

Here's one of our qualifiers-Tiffany Delgado, Class of 2019!

"As a four year qualifier, Nationals has gifted me with new knowledge and opportunities every year I attend. Nationals is not only an opportunity to learn from the best in the nation and grow as a debater, but it sparks inspiration and innovation every single year. Every time I have attended nationals, my teammates and I have felt inspired to try new events, interested in trying new techniques we learned, and motivated to work harder the following year. This trip also allows for students on our team to bond in a very special way. After nationals, students tend to rely on each other more and are more focused on the entirety of the team's success, rather than their own. Nationals is a truly unique experience in which the benefits cannot be reaped anywhere else. I can attest to the fact that nationals changes the way student perform when coming back to competing in state. Last year, I placed 10th in the country in Impromptu Speaking, and this year, I am determined to break to the final round in the same event."
