Willow Students Step Into the School Year with New Vans! ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›:

On Saturday, August 22, 2026, several Willow Elementary School students participated in a special Vans shoe giveaway, where each student had the exciting opportunity to select a new pair of shoes of their choice. Seeing the smiles and excitement on our studentsโ€™ faces made the event especially meaningful.

This wonderful experience was made possible through the generosity and partnership of the San Diego Police Departmentโ€™s Gang Intervention Unit (GIU) and Community Youth Services (CYS), Panera, and the Vans Store at Mission Valley. Their commitment to giving back and creating positive experiences for our students is greatly appreciated.

A special thank you to Officer Jesus Estrada and the SDPD team for their continued partnership with Willow Elementary, as well as to Principal Melissa Cerda and Special Programs Liaison Cristina Inzunza for their coordination and commitment in making this experience possible for our students. This event was a wonderful example of what can happen when our schools and community partners come together for our children.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this special day possible for our Willow Roadrunners! ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Our new shade structure at the La Mirada Elementary School playground is nearly complete! This much-needed addition will provide students with a more comfortable, shaded space to play, gather, and enjoy outdoor activities throughout the school day.

This improvement is part of the San Ysidro School Districtโ€™s continued efforts to enhance our school facilities and create safe, welcoming, and student-centered learning environments. Improvements like these help ensure our campuses continue to meet the needs of our students while providing spaces where they can learn, play, and thrive.

This week, we officially broke ground on the Grace A. Kojima Educational Resource Center (KERC), located at the former Beyer Elementary School site, marking the start of construction on a project long anticipated by the District and our community. The new center is envisioned as a Districtwide hub that will provide educational resources, services, and spaces for students, families, and staff. This important milestone represents another step forward in bringing the centerโ€™s vision to life and reflects the communityโ€™s investment through the Districtโ€™s General Obligation Bond Measures T and U.

๐Ÿ“šโœจ ABC 10News Storytime Brings the Joy of Reading to La Mirada Elementary! ๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŽ’๐ŸŒŸ:

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, students at La Mirada Elementary School enjoyed an exciting literacy experience as ABC 10News Storytime kicked off the school year with a special visit! Students from Ms. Marinโ€™s SDC 1st Grade, Ms. Cuevaโ€™s 1st/2nd Grade, and Ms. Diazโ€™s 1st Grade participated in a fun-filled morning celebrating books, reading, and imagination. ABC 10News morning anchors Jared Aarons and Melissa Mecija were joined by acclaimed author and illustrator Salina Yoon, who brought reading to life by sharing her book, I Like Cheese. Each student also received a copy of the book to take home.

Following Storytime, students participated in a mini book fair, where they browsed a wide selection of age- and grade-appropriate books and selected five books of their choice to take home and keep. Students also received school supplies and a special backpack courtesy of North Island Credit Union. Since ABC 10News Storytime began in 2023, the program has distributed more than 10,000 books to children throughout the San Diego region, helping young readers build their own home libraries and discover the joy of reading.

The San Ysidro School District extends its sincere appreciation to ABC 10News Storytime, author Salina Yoon, North Island Credit Union, and the La Mirada Elementary School staff for creating such a memorable experience for our students. A special thank you to Principal Julie Pretzer and Special Programs Liaison Cristina Inzunza for coordinating this wonderful event and helping make this opportunity possible for our students. Experiences like these inspire a love of reading, strengthen literacy, and encourage young learners to explore new stories, ideas, and adventuresโ€”one book at a time

๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’™ San Ysidro School District Recognizes Carmen Saucedo for Her Generous Support of Classics 4 Kids Program ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’™ย :

On August 13, 2026, the San Ysidro School District Governing Board and Superintendent proudly recognized Carmen Saucedo for her generous contribution in support of the Classics 4 Kids program and her commitment to bringing meaningful arts experiences to San Ysidro students. Her generosity helps provide students with access to innovative educational concerts and music experiences that inspire creativity, strengthen learning, and introduce children to diverse cultures and traditions. Through programs such as A Musical Voyage Across the Pacific, elementary students explored the rich traditions of Polynesia through live hula, drumming, chant, and orchestral music celebrating culture, family (สปohana), and the sea. The performance brought music, dance, and storytelling together in an engaging experience that extended learning beyond the classroom.

The Governing Board and Superintendent expressed their sincere gratitude to Carmen for believing in the importance of music and arts education and for investing in experiences that can have a lasting impact on children. Classics 4 Kids not only introduces students to live orchestral music, but also connects the arts with social-emotional learning, STEAM concepts, and California Arts Standards, helping students make meaningful connections between music and their classroom learning. Carmenโ€™s generosity represents the wonderful spirit of the San Ysidro communityโ€”people coming together to enrich the lives of children and provide experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. On behalf of our students, families, staff, Governing Board, and the entire San Ysidro community, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Carmen Saucedo for her generosity and continued commitment to the children of San Ysidro.
