Is your child having trouble reading?
Parents with children struggling with reading problems may be in denial at first. You may think you just need to wait... and the reading problem will resolve itself. Even the school may also advise the same.
However, the best time to help a child with a reading problem is NOW. . And by ‘now’ I mean the moment you discover there is a problem. For you, that may be kindergarten, 1st grade or older.
What ever level your child is, there is help.
You can (and should) render early intervention.
How Do You Know Your Child Has a Reading Problem?
Here are some behaviors you may observe:
*Has problems learning or remembering what letters sound like.
*Rather than being smooth and fluent, oral reading is choppy.
*Incorrectly reads words.
*Words may be recognized on one page but not on the next.
*Replaces similar-looking words, such as house with horse.
*Instead of sounding out words, guesses at them.
*Unable to sound out unfamiliar words.
*When reading stories, substitutes similar words. Instead of “horse”, it may be read “pony”.

Do any of these sound familiar to you? Don’t worry, you are not alone. It is not that your child is not capable of reading; it is just that your child needs to be taught to approach reading differently.
Studies have shown that a child's reading skills can improve rapidly with a method that breaks down the language and teaches the reader to decode based on syllable types and spelling rules.
I know that words like “decode”, “syllable types” and “spelling rules” can sound daunting. I get it, I had a son who was a struggling reader, and I had to navigate all this myself many years ago when there was little support for struggling readers. If you are wondering if your child needs help in reading I am always willing to give a simple assessment and make a plan for success, all for free.

Not every student with dyslexia has ADHD, but it's about 40%. Regardless of the percent, it's ALWAYS critical that we see the individual person and not just the label (or behaviors).

I worry a lot about getting things wrong,
Everything I do takes twice as long.
Everyday is exhausting for me...
Looking through the fog of ADHD.
I'm often so misunderstood,
I would change in a heartbeat if I could.

Understanding is essential to effective support.

Please cast the vision for why we want to read. Learning to read can be so challenging but without a why or a desire, it can be even more laborious. Help your child FEEL why they want to read—the emotional connection when you read to them, and all the exciting adventures that await them in books.

They are never too old to listen too! Especially our struggling readers need to listen to enjoy a good story!
