Did you know that August is officially National Get Ready for Kindergarten Month? ๐ŸŽ’โœจ

Here in the J.O. Combs Unified School District, our newest little scholars got a head start on the celebration! With our school year kicking off on Monday, July 27th, our kindergarteners are already busy making friends, learning class routines, and adjusting to big-kid life.

Whether your student marched in with total confidence or you both shed a few first-day tears, August is all about building confidence and getting into a great rhythm.

๐Ÿ’ก 3 Ways to Keep the Momentum Going This August
Master the Morning Routine: Keeping bedtimes and wake-up schedules consistent (even on weekends!) makes the transition into full school days so much smoother.

Ask Specific Questions: Swap "How was your day?" for "What made you smile today?" or "What did you play at recess?" to get them talking.

Celebrate Small Victories: Unpacking their own folder, trying a new food at lunch, or hanging up their backpack are all big milestones worth cheering for!

To our Combs kindergarten families: How did your mini-scholarโ€™s first week go? Drop a photo of their first day or share your favorite moment in the comments below! ๐Ÿ‘‡โค๏ธ

๐ŸŽ‰ Ready for Kindergarten: You've Got This! ๐Ÿš€

The big day is almost here! It is completely normal for both you and your child to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. Children feed off our energy, so keeping conversations about school positive, confident, and enthusiastic is the best send-off you can give them.

Tonight's Checklist:
Pick out the first-day outfit together.
Pack the backpack and place it by the door.
Read a reassuring book (like The Kissing Hand or Our Class is a Family).
Get a good night's sleep (parents included!).

To all the families starting this incredible new chapter: We are cheering you on! Welcome to kindergarten! ๐ŸŽ“โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ’ช Ready for Kindergarten: "I can do it myself!" ๐ŸŽ’

In a classroom of 20+ kids, self-help skills are a superpower. Boosting your childโ€™s independence this week will give them a massive confidence injection for their first week of school.

Skills to practice together this week:

The Lunchbox Trial: Let them practice opening and closing their school water bottle and lunch containers.

Coat & Shoes: Practice zipping jackets and putting on Velcro shoes independently.

Fine Motor Fun: Play with Playdough, use child-safe scissors, or practice drawing to strengthen the hand muscles needed for writing.

What skill is your little one mastering right now?

๐Ÿ“š Ready for Kindergarten: Raising a Reader โœจ

You donโ€™t need flashcards or worksheets to get your child ready for school literacy. The most powerful tool you have is already on your bookshelf! Reading aloud just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to millions of words and builds critical listening skills.

Try this during your next storytime:

Ask open-ended questions like, "What do you think will happen next?"

Run your finger under the words as you read to show that text moves left to right.

Point out rhyming words or look for letters that start their own name.

Drop your child's favorite picture book in the comments! ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ‘‡

โค๏ธ Ready for Kindergarten: Big Feelings, Big Steps ๐Ÿค

Kindergarten is as much about emotional growth as it is about academics. Sharing, taking turns, and expressing feelings are major parts of the school day.

Help your little one practice social-emotional skills at home this week:

Name the feeling: Use books or daily moments to identify emotions ("It looks like that character is feeling frustrated. What helps you when you're frustrated?").

Practice waiting: Play board games or cooperative games that require waiting for a turn.

Normalise goodbye: Talk about how it's okay to feel sad at drop-off, but reassure them that you will always come back.

Tag a fellow parent who is navigating these big milestones this month!
