🎶 ‘Twas the Night Before Band Class 🎶
(Inspired by “A Visit from St. Nicholas”)
‘Twas the night before school, and all through the hall,
Not a trumpet was buzzing, no drumstick would fall.
The uniforms hung in the closet with care,
In hopes that the band kids soon would be there.
The reeds were all resting, the valve oil was done,
The flutes and the clarinets dreamed of day one.
And I in my lanyard and fresh seating chart,
Had just cleaned the podium, ready to start.
When out on the sidewalk there arose such a clatter,
I peeked through the window to see what was the matter.
Away to the band doors I flew like a flash,
Tore open the entry with a musical splash!
The moon on the lockers and shine of the floor,
Gave sparkle to cases and stands by the door.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But students with instruments, grinning ear to ear.
With trombones and tubas and saxophones wide,
Excitement and nerves they just couldn’t hide.
They marched down the hallway, so eager and proud,
I knew in a moment, they’d soon play out loud.
More rapid than drumrolls, the students they came,
And I whistled and shouted and called them by name:
"Now, Flutes! Now, Trumpets! Now, Low Brass and Reeds!
On, Percussion! Let’s focus! Let’s follow the leads!"
To your chairs in your rows! Your warmups, begin!
Let’s start this year strong — now let the joy in!
So into the band room the musicians they flew,
With folders and pencils and cases brand new.
And then in a heartbeat, I heard the first sound,
The tapping of feet and the sticks on the ground.
As I raised up my hands and gave the downbeat,
The silence was gone, replaced with the beat.
Their eyes — how they sparkled! Their fingers — so fast!
The music came soaring; the moment had passed.
They sight-read and smiled and gave it their all,
Bringing life and new joy to the old band hall.
I laughed to myself as they played with such cheer,
This, right here, is why I teach every year.
And I said to them all as the day reached its end,
"Welcome back, mighty band — now let the music transcend!"
