Beautiful pottery is about more than just the form, it’s the surface that tells the story.
In this six-week intermediate course, you’ll unlock the creative potential of leather-hard clay while building a versatile toolbox of decorative techniques that will transform the way you approach your work.
Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and hands-on practice, you’ll learn how to create texture, pattern, depth, and imagery that complements and enhances your forms.
Techniques may include:
* Colored slips and slip trailing
* Sprigs and dimensional clay additions
* Sgraffito and Mishima
* Vinyl stencils, wax and latex resists
* Water etching and layered surface techniques
* Underglaze transfers, mono-printing, and screen printing
* Brushing, pouring, and dipping glazes to enhance decorated surfaces
By the end of the course, you’ll have a personal Surface Library to reference for years to come and a versatile toolbox of techniques that you can continue applying to your own work long after the class ends.
More importantly, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to experiment, combine techniques, and develop a surface style that is uniquely your own.
Prerequisite: Completion of at least one pottery course. Open to both wheel throwers and hand-builders.
