KINGS' DAY
Kings Day is celebrated annually on the 6th of January. As a rule, Kings Day is celebrated on the night of January 5th to 6th, that is, on the eve of Kings Day.
This day is also known as the Festival of Epiphany.
KING'S DAY TRADITIONS
This Catholic celebration is associated with the Christmas tradition, which says that three wise men from the East visited the Child Jesus on the night of the 5th to the 6th of January, after being guided by a star.
The three wise men were called Belchior, Baltazar and Gaspar and they brought to the Child Jesus gifts, gold, incense and myrrh.
Tradition dictates that on this day the family will reunite to celebrate the end of the Christmas celebrations. The foods of Noite de Reis are: cod with boiled potatoes, bolo-rei, sponge cake, french toast, dreams, among other Christmas delicacies.
It is also the day when the "Janeiras" are sung, which begins after Christmas and continues until the Kings Day.
The day after Kings Day, families begin to remove the Christmas ornaments that decorate the houses during the Christmas season.
