Dominican University of California is an independent university located 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, California. Founded in 1890 by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, Dominican enjoys a century-long reputation for excellence in scholarship, research, and community outreach. Join us! Dominican University of California Faculty Lecture Series - From Snake Oil to Social Media

Our desire for health, longevity, and bodily control makes us susceptible to the promise of quick cures. Today’s wellness landscape prioritizes algorithmic advice, viral detoxes, and AI diagnoses. Relying on unverified remedies is far from new. To understand how we navigate medical "truth,” we can look across history, psychology, and modern healthcare systems to see how information spreads, why it takes root, and who stands to profit.

Join Dominican University of California faculty members Vivian Delchamps Wolf, Sophie Whynacht, and Michael Skolnik for a panel exploring the boundaries of medicine, wellness, and trust. Drawing connections from 19th-century medicines to modern influencer culture and politicized care, the panelists will examine why mythical cures persist, how digital culture shapes our relationship with our bodies, and how patients can build critical information literacy in an age of digital noise. The 90-minute session will feature short presentations from each panelist followed by an open audience Q&A.

Laurel Druke ’12 believes that leadership begins with helping others find their voice. As Vice President of Finance at North Bay Children’s Center, she oversees a $20 million budget supporting childcare and early education for more than 700 children across 14 locations, while serving also as president of the Marin Women’s Political Action Committee, through which she works to expand opportunities for women in local leadership. At Dominican, Laurel combined her interests in political science and business, finding mentors and opportunities that helped her grow as a leader and discover the power of building relationships, listening, and making space for others.
