First few seconds in the ice bath, I think I'm having a heart attack. Every time.

This is what I tell the young men right before we send them in. I'm standing there at Young Men's Ultimate Weekend, minutes away from the plunge, and I don't tell them it's easy. I tell them the truth about me.

My nervous system takes over. I'm out of control. Then I get my breath back, and the whole thing flips into "I can do this."

Then I name what's real. I feel the ice water. I see the sun. I feel my butt on the bottom of the bath.

Breath first. Mind second. 15 seconds.

And the ice is just the practice round. It's the same 15 seconds before a job interview, before a hard conversation with a professor, before he tells his boss he made a mistake.

His body won't know the difference. That's the point.

They don't need me to be calm. They need to watch me come back.

He's not lazy. He's on the drip.

Adrenaline. Cortisol. The same negative thought, on repeat, all day.

I asked the young men at .mens.ultimate.weekend who does this.

🙋‍♂️Every hand went up.

Awareness first. Then breath in, breath out, and wait for your body to breathe you. Endorphins, serotonin, dopamine. The body relaxes that quickly.

"I can't" becomes "I can" when you control your breath first.

Teenage son shutting down, slamming doors, or arguing over nothing?

There's a reason it escalates, and it isn't defiance.

I spenr two weekends this summer with young men ages 13 to 20 at .mens.ultimate.weekend, and I told this last group something most parents never hear said out loud.

When a parent loses control, the son regresses. He drops into the same brain pattern he used at eight. And he reads your loss of control as permission to act like a boy.

Then the second half happens.

He acts like a boy, you're exhausted, you don't want the fight, so you give him his way. Not because you're weak. Because you've been running on adrenaline and cortisol since 6am and there's nothing left.

That's the loop. Good parents and one good kid, all stuck in a holding pattern.

Somebody has to be the first one to calm down. In a family, that's the job, not a personality trait.

I tell the young men that if their parents can't do it, they should. Most of the time, though, it's the parent who's actually able to go first.

Follow along for more of what I teach these young men, and what you can use at your own kitchen table.

He's not addicted to his phone. He's being controlled.

Mentor your son to trust his own innate intelligence. Not AI.

Most parenting experts don't know about this: https://ymuw.org 🔥

👉 Most parenting experts focus on fixing behavior problems.

‼️ But here's what they're missing:

Teenage boys aren't broken. They're biologically wired to seek challenge, purpose, and mentorship.

The problem? Modern life rarely gives them those things.

For thousands of years, cultures used rites of passage to activate a young man's natural drive to step up.

They used trained mentors and proven methods to transform boys into confident men.

Today's boys are anxious, unmotivated, and glued to screens—not because something's wrong with them, but because they're missing these ancient essentials.

At the Young Men's Ultimate Weekend, I've watched it happen over and over.

Boys who seemed lazy or indifferent walk in on Friday.

By Sunday, they're standing taller, speaking up, taking ownership.

Same kid. Different environment.

Your son doesn't need another consequence or another lecture about his attitude.

He needs what every generation of young men before him needed: a challenge that pushes him, mentors who believe in him, and a community that calls him higher.

That's not a parenting strategy. That's biology.

If your teenage son is stuck, struggling, or pulling away—this isn't about you failing as a parent.

It's about him missing something essential to his development.
