The Helix School

The Helix School The Helix School is a non-profit school, located in San Rafael, CA, serving children with mild to moderate autism spectrum disorder.

Helix’s mission is to provide quality instruction to children with ASD, so they may experience the success, self-realization, and fulfillment that come from learning, self-expression, self-care, and community participation. Our teaching strategies are based on recent advances in naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions, with an emphasis on pivotal response training. Different curricula

and programs are integrated into the school depending on the needs of the child. Helix’s vision is to provide effective programming for children with ASD by staying current with best practices in education and clinical research. We value a collaborative relationship with parents, caregivers and other professionals to provide a caring and consistent environment across school and home. Our priorities are to respect, appreciate, and encourage each child’s strengths, while providing support and structure to improve attention, self-regulation, language, focus, and life skills.

We’re excited to announce the Helix School has been awarded a grant from Ability Central to support our Build the Room campaign. With this funding, we will make sensory-informed upgrades to our classrooms to help our students better regulate, feel supported and be ready to learn!

We’re grateful to Ability Central for partnering with us to expand access and remove barriers for autistic and neurodivergent learners.

Independence means something special at The Helix School. Every skill learned, every challenge overcome, every moment of growth — that's independence in action. This Fourth of July, we celebrate the big and small victories of our students. Happy holiday to the Helix Community!

Curiosity doesn't wait for the right moment–it creates one.

That's exactly what our Extended School Year (ESY) students did this week at the California Academy of Sciences. They engaged, asked questions and turned every exhibit into an opportunity to learn something new.

That's the Helix way!

At Helix, our Occupational Therapy services go above and beyond to meet each student where they are.

Meet Brooklyn.
She used to go by Lilo. Then Moana. Then Pesto Pasta. Now, sometimes, she goes by her name Brooklyn. She is a vibrant 2nd grader who enjoys art and singing. Through her sessions with our occupational therapist Belden, she’s developed handwriting skills along with the confidence to write her ABC’s in front of her whole class. As she’s grown more confident, Brooklyn is slowly but surely, finding her way back to herself. This is what individualized support looks like.

Occupational therapy helps students like Brooklyn develop essential skills from handwriting to sensory regulation to social interaction. The Move-a-Thon directly funds our occupational therapy department, physical education, and recess – programs that keep our students active, engaged, and thriving.
