Having the confidence to speak in front of an audience is an important 21st century skill—and it’s one that can be honed through instruction and practice. At MWS, students are frequently asked to present their work to classmates, in addition to reading out loud and reciting verses as part of our language arts curriculum. Combined with our robust program in the performing arts, MWS students become comfortable and confident as public speakers.

You can see the sense of accomplishment in our 4th graders' faces as they presented their animal reports to the school community this spring. These long-term reports teach writing and research skills, but they also include a creative component, with each student building a diorama of their assigned animal in its natural habitat. Independent projects will become more frequent and more complex over the next few years, but our rising 5th grade class showed that they are more than ready for the challenge.

¡Cuentanos de Colombia! Studying a new language is more than grammar and mechanics; it’s a bridge to world cultures and people. During the 2025-26 school year, 8th graders were assigned a country report in Spanish class, learning about geography, culture, economy, and people in countries where Spanish is the official language.

“The main goal of this project is to appreciate cultures from other countries and have a better understanding of how people live in those countries,” says Maestra Loreto. “In Waldorf education, studying a foreign language allows an individual to escape the limits of conventional, abstract thought and instead connect with the unique spirit and soul of a different culture.”

Having the opportunity to perform for an audience is an important part of our grades 1-8 music program. Throughout the school year, students are given numerous opportunities to perform at assemblies and concerts—such as the spring assembly, pictured here, in which 6th graders joined Ms. Mallard on ukulele (slide 1), 4th graders player recorder (slide 2), and 7th graders shared recent work in cello and violin with Mr. Fecskes (slide 3). These experiences encourage close collaboration among classmates; they also offer an invaluable opportunity for self-expression and confidence-building for our young musicians.
