🎒A new school year is almost here! For our youngest learners, returning to school especially into a Spanish immersion environment can be a big transition for their emotions, routines, brains, and language.

Here are a few simple ways you can help make the transition smoother:

🇪🇸 Bring Spanish into your home! Most of our families don’t speak Spanish at home, and that’s absolutely okay! You can listen to Spanish songs, enjoy a bilingual book, practice a few simple classroom words, or simply show excitement when your child uses Spanish. You don’t have to speak Spanish to support your child’s bilingual journey.

⏰ Start rebuilding routines. A few days before school starts, gradually return to consistent bedtimes, wake-up times, meals, and morning routines. Predictability helps young children feel safe and prepared when things change.

🎭 Try some school role-play! Children learn through play, so pretend you’re having a school day at home. Take turns being the teacher and the student. Practice saying goodbye, hanging up a backpack, finding a classroom, having snack, asking for help, or meeting a new friend. You can even introduce a few simple Spanish phrases like hola, adiós, por favor, and gracias. This playful rehearsal can make unfamiliar experiences feel more familiar.

📚 Read, sing & play together. A few minutes of Spanish songs, stories, or pretend play each day can help children reconnect with the sounds and rhythm of the language. Don’t worry about translating every word the goal is positive, meaningful exposure.

💛 Keep goodbyes confident and predictable. A loving hug, a simple goodbye routine, and reassurance that you’ll see them after school can help children feel secure. It’s okay for them to have big feelings, transition takes time!

And remember: you don’t need to know Spanish to be an important part of your child’s bilingual education. Your encouragement, curiosity, and positive attitude make a difference.

We were delighted to welcome a friend, who introduced our students to the wonderful world of the ukulele! 🌈

Music is so much more than simply learning an instrument. Research shows that engaging with music can support children’s brain development, memory, concentration, listening skills, and language development. It can support academic learning too, from remembering information and following patterns to developing focus and problem-solving skills.

Most importantly, music gives children an opportunity to create, express themselves, build confidence and have fun while learning.

We believe that a well-rounded education nurtures the whole child. Experiences like this help our students discover new interests, develop important skills and make wonderful memories along the way!

🎓Our graduation this year was a beautiful reminder of how much our children have grown, not only in their academics and Spanish language skills but also in confidence, kindness, curiosity, and independence. Behind every milestone is a teacher who believed in them, encouraged them, and celebrated them along the way.

What makes Welcome Amigos different is our extraordinary team of educators. They come from all corners of the world… Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, and other Spanish-speaking countries, bringing authentic language and rich cultural traditions into our classrooms every day.

But they're much more than native speakers. They are experienced early childhood educators who understand how young children learn best. Our teachers are dedicated to continuous professional growth, staying current with the latest teaching practices through classes and professional development at local Bay Area colleges.

As we shared during graduation, our teachers create an environment where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to learn. That isn't just something we celebrate at graduation it's what happens every single day at school.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Elizabeth moved to California in 1992 with a dream of making a difference through education. What began in 1998 as a passion for teaching Spanish while raising her young daughter grew into Welcome Amigos International School, a place where children are immersed in language, culture, kindness, and a love of learning. Her dedication to early childhood education, combined with years of professional training and classroom experience, has helped shape a nurturing community where every child can thrive.

Elizabeth believes that learning a second language opens doors to endless opportunities while celebrating the beauty of culture, connection, and family values.

Learning a second language in our after school program/summer camp does more than help children communicate it also supports academic growth. Our little learners are busy strengthening their fine motor skills through hands-on activities every day! Fine motor skills involve the small muscles in the hands and fingers that children use for important everyday tasks like writing, drawing, buttoning clothes, using scissors, and holding a pencil with confidence.

These activities may look like simple play, but they are carefully planned to support children's cognitive development, hand-eye coordination, concentration, independence, and school readiness.

At Welcome Amigos International School, we've been nurturing young learners for 28 years. Our experienced Early Childhood educators understand that the early years are the foundation for lifelong learning.
