I have 27 years of tutoring experience in both school-based and private settings working with children and adolescents, some of whom have complex social/emotional issues, learning challenges and developmental disorders. I have worked with over 1400 students from 34 schools on the Peninsula and have consistently guided them toward improved test scor
es and higher grades. EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE
As a Burlingame native, I attended Franklin Elementary, Burlingame Intermediate and Burlingame High School. I have a Bachelor of Arts in World Arts and Cultures with an emphasis in art history from the University of California, Los Angeles. From 1992-1996, I served as a tutor and a mentor in several volunteer outreach programs in Southern California. As part of a coordinated effort at UCLA, I offered academic support to elementary schoolers who were transported to the college campus from Watts. Additionally, I volunteered as a GED tutor at the Business Industry School in Crenshaw; I provided academic and emotional support to adolescent mothers in a weekly process group designed to promote healthy decision-making and strong parenting skills. As an Arts Reach intern, I introduced these incarcerated teens to the healing power of the arts during weekly classes that focused on effective communication, problem-solving and coping skills. I collaborated with Arts Reach staff and the wards to produce a brief documentary to deter youths outside of the prison system from engaging in gang activity. After graduating from UCLA with honors in 1996, I returned to Northern California and founded Learning with Lindsay. I have specialized training in the Lindamood-Bell method for reading comprehension and phonics and in the Princeton Review strategies for SAT preparation. In May 2010, I completed my Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology in Expressive Arts Therapy at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. I work with students with a spectrum of educational needs, including auditory processing difficulties, attention deficit disorders (ADD, ADHD), dyslexia, issues of executive functioning and Asperger’s Syndrome. As a member of the North County School Crisis Intervention Team in Burlingame, I helped to devise strategies for crisis prevention and intervention for at-risk teens. My experience also includes offering presentations on SAT test-taking strategies and tools for academic success to the Burlingame High School Parents’ Group and to the Aragon Asian Parents’ Group. Upon parents’ requests, I advocate for students’ needs by composing letters requesting educational service accommodations, drafting letters of recommendation and attending parent/teacher conferences and Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings. I am a strong believer that art is a powerful tool to enhance and support learning. With this in mind, I founded and currently facilitate Artz Groupz, arts-oriented peer groups that offer support in the following areas: coping with academic stress, easing anxiety, developing healthy decision-making skills and navigating peer and family relationships.
