Today marks Buddha Purnima, the day of birth, enlightenment, and the eventual attainment of samadhi/salvation by the Buddha (Siddhartha Gauthama). The coincidence of these three events are considered triply auspicious, and is celebrated as a very significant day in a person’s spiritual journey.

Today marks the Hindu Solar New Year which is called Puthandu, Vaisakhi, Mesha Sankranti, or Vishu. It is celebrated in many states such as Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Kerala. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it is tradition to prepare a kani or a plate that has flowers, fruits and coins that symbolize wealth and good fortune. The kani is supposed to be the first thing seen in the morning because it is believed that the upcoming year will be very good if one views auspicious and joyful items at the start of the year.

Today we celebrate Ugadi, Yugadi, or Gudipadwa, also known as Samvatsarādi. Ugadi marks the
start of a new year for the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra in India. As per Hindu mythology it is believed Ugadi is the day Brahma commenced the act of creation. To celebrate, many families prepare Ugadi Pachadi, a mixture of the six tastes (spice, salt, sweet, bitter, and two types of sour) that symbolizes the different experiences of life. Happy Ugadi, Yugadi, Gudipadwa, and Samvatsarādi from the VSDA family! Swipe to view Dassana’s Veg Recipes' take on the dish…

Happy Holi from our VSDA family to yours!
Holi (also known as the festival of colors) is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals. It is a welcoming of spring, when family and friends celebrate this day by playing with colors and eating special cuisines. It also has deep mythological significance, with stories such as the story of Prahlad and Narasimha (the lion-headed avatar of Vishnu) which signifies good winning over evil, and stories of love and friendship, such as the stories of Krishna and the gopikas playing Holi in Vrindavan.

Mahashivratri is termed as the ‘Great Night of Shiva’ and it is said that Lord Shiva saved the entire universe from a pot of poison that emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan. Devotees celebrate this festival with zeal and enthusiasm. According to mythology, it is said that Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati on this day, and on the same night he performed the Tandava dance.
