Congratulations to Aragon Football's Isaiah Johnson - he was named to the San Mateo Daily Journal's Honor Roll of the Week's Best Athletic Performances!

"After a Week 1 thriller that nearly went to overtime in Aragon’s dramatic 35-28 win over Silver Creek, Johnson and company navigated a more even-keel 27-6 win over Oak Grove to improve to 2-0. The senior quarterback totaled 338 yards with a high-percentage 21-of-28 passing for 296 yards and four touchdowns, including three scoring strikes to sophomore receiver Ben Henderson. Johnson pushed his total over 300 yards on the groundout, adding six rushes for 42 yards."

Congratulations to Hillsdale High School Water Polo's Adrian Chindris, he was named the San Mateo Daily Journal Athlete of the Week!

"Adrian Chindris and Parker Lee, the team’s only two returning starters, have fronted an exciting start to the 2026 boys’ water polo campaign, with Hillsdale opening on a three-game win streak. The Knights’ most recent victory, 12-9 over Willow Glen-San Jose in last Thursday’s home opener, started with the returning All-Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division second-team defender Lee on lockdown. But, with head coach Bryan Bent’s hopes of a one-two punch coming to fruition, Chindris stepped up to enjoy a career performance.

Chindris converted three quick scores, and went on to total career-highs of eight goals and eight steals to earn Daily Journal Athlete of the Week honors."

SMUHSD is incredibly thankful for its more than 1,000 parents, guardians, and community members who have already started the volunteer clearance process for this school year!

Our school sites have numerous volunteer opportunities that include:
> One-Time Guest Speaker, College Advisor, or Career Consultant
> Chaperone and/or Driver for single-day field trips
> Classroom Assistants, Club Advisors/Mentors, Overnight/Extended Field Trip Chaperones

In collaboration with Stanford Climate Week, Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action will host its first‑ever Youth for Earth (Y4E) Hackathon for Bay Area high school students. The event convenes students, industry, and decision‑makers to exchange innovative environmental software solutions through a pitch presentation format.

The Hackathon Prompt releases on September 20, which is four (4) weeks before Stanford Climate Week, which takes place from October 19- 25. During this four‑week Design Period, students can develop their project. The mandatory one‑day project pitch happens during Stanford Climate Week on October 25, from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Stanford campus.

Tentative prizes are $300 for 1st place, $150 for 2nd, and $100 for 3rd.

Registrations are open until September 19, 11:59 p.m. at tinyurl.com/svycahackathon26. You can register individually or with a team of up to three members.

Free Program Takes Guesswork Out of Recycling

Puzzled about what goes in the green, black and blue bins and what really gets recycled? Two experts will explain proper sorting and answer all your questions at a free program on Wednesday, September 16, at the Burlingame Community Center at 850 Burlingame Ave. in Burlingame. You’ll also have a chance to participate in a recycling contest, with prizes awarded to winners, and hear from a representative from Peninsula Precious Plastics, a nonprofit that recycles “unrecyclable” plastic into useful items. There is no charge for admission, but pre-registration is required at https://bit.ly/TipsRecycling.

Presented by the Citizens Environmental Council, “Better at the Bin: What Goes into Your 3 Bins and Why Your Help Matters,” will feature two Recology authorities: Monica DeVincenzi, Community Outreach Manager, and Alex Rinear, Waste Zero Manager. They’ll explain what happens to materials after Recology services your carts, and will share the latest news in manufacturing, state legislation and extended producer responsibility. The presentation will include videos of recycling and composting facilities, contamination quizzes, a review of acceptable materials and everyday actions for a more sustainable lifestyle. There will be plenty of time for questions.

Congrats to Aragon Football's Jaxon Sullivan - he was named the San Mateo Daily Journal Athlete of the Week!

"Sullivan enjoyed a big night, gaining 161 total yards, including 25 carries for 85 yards with four touchdowns on the ground. That includes the game-winning score, an 8-yard sweep around the left side to break a 28-28 tie with just over five minutes to play."
