✨ From the Classroom to Disney! ✨

Disney Program Recruiter Savone James visited Dr. Hodgson Career Readiness COMM 3322 class on October 1st. Savone's presentation topic was "Interviewing 101" and information about Disney internships and student programs. These opportunities include corporate, entertainment, and sports divisions (such as ESPN), offering hands on U.S. and global work experience. These are working-and-learning opportunities located at Disney World, Florida and Disneyland, California.

Leadership Communication COMM 4347 had industry representatives from Insight Global speaking about career opportunities and readiness after graduation. Insight Global is a Talent, Consulting, and AI company that connects people with opportunities. They hire our Texas State graduates (Communication Studies Majors and Minors) and guest speaker Sage Jones is a Communication Studies graduate of May 2026. She was offered an opportunity before graduation and immediately went to work for Insight Global and is currently an account manager. It was great to have Sage back in the classroom but this time providing information, recruitment and career advice to our college students.
A huge thank you to Sage and Carsen Whitten, Talent Acquisition Specialist for providing a fantastic industry advice session to our students.

Dr. Nikkie Saldivar Hodgson and Charles “Chuck” Kaufman represented the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) at the Texas State University Internship Fair in the LBJ Grand Ballroom.

They connected with numerous students from COFAC and beyond, sharing valuable insights about internships, career opportunities, and gaining professional experience while in college. Students also had the opportunity to connect with industry representatives from organizations including KXAN-TV, South by Southwest, and the Austin Film Festival.

Dr. Hodgson works with students majoring or minoring in Communication Studies, while Mr. Kaufman works with students in School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) disciplines.

🌟 Internship Spotlight: Danna Mora 🌟

Meet Danna Mora, a Communication Studies major gaining hands-on experience as a Regional Manager Intern with The Wellness Society! 🌿✨

The Wellness Society is an exclusive, event based global wellness community with city and school chapters. Its approach to wellness goes beyond physical health, incorporating mental health, faith and fellowship, and mindfulness.

Danna is already putting her communication skills to work while interacting with customers, employees, managers, and social media. She shared:
“I would say the internship has been partially rewarding so far. It can be difficult when there are many things happening at once, but I can already see how the experience is helping me improve my interpersonal communication. Since this is a communication internship, I think getting experience with customers, employees, managers, and social media is valuable. I am still very early in the internship, so I am looking forward to seeing what else I learn as I become more comfortable with my responsibilities and the workplace.”

We love seeing Danna embrace the learning process and recognize how hands-on experiences can strengthen communication skills in the workplace! We’re excited to see where this opportunity takes her. 👏

What an honor to welcome our textbook author and former Communication Studies Chair, Dr. Steven Beebe, as a guest speaker in Dr. Nikkie Hodgson's graduate Training and Development course on Thursday evening, October 1st. Dr. Beebe is a Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Dr. Beebe has authored or co-authored 14 books, published more than 60 articles and chapters, and presented over 160 professional conference papers. A highly acclaimed educator, he has received numerous teaching awards, including the prestigious 2018 Piper Professor recognition and the Outstanding Communication Professor in America award. His scholarship and contributions to the field of communication have impacted millions of students.
Dr. Beebe shared the history of effective communication (rhetoric, persuasion, and public speaking) which dates to Ancient Greece and Rome and about communication leaders like Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. In addition, he shared information about his career in communication and highlighted the importance of always understanding the needs (training) of your clients.

🌟 Internship Spotlight: Justin Jacobs 🌟

Meet Justin Jacobs, a Communication Studies major gaining hands-on experience as a Communication Intern at Guadalupe Brewing Company! 🍻

In his internship, Justin is taking the lead on communication efforts for charity events, working with local newspapers and radio stations, and using social media to connect with the community and promote Guadalupe Brewing Company’s story and history.

💬 “My role in this internship is to take the lead at organizing the communication aspects of the charity event and by being involved in planning the follow-on event in the April. I am to connect with local newspapers, radio stations, and take to social media to promote and communicate the event by selling the story of Guadalupe Breweries history. I aim to transform GB by implementing new ideas and to reach the community through social media.” —Justin Jacobs

🌟 Internship Spotlight: Enrique Lara 🌟

Meet Enrique Lara, a Journalism major and Communication Studies minor gaining valuable hands-on experience as a Policy Research Intern at HillCo Partners in Austin! 🏛️

Through his internship, Enrique is gaining firsthand experience in Texas policy by attending Texas House of Representatives committee meetings and hearings, researching policy discussions, and reporting his findings to HillCo’s clients. He has already had the opportunity to cover hearings on educational foundations, law enforcement pay, and higher education funding, as well as work inside the Texas State Capitol.

💬 “At HillCo Partners, I work as a policy research intern along six other interns under a small team of policy researchers. In simple terms, I am a professional note taker. I listen to the Texas House of Representatives committee meetings and hearings and report policy discussed to be shared with HillCo’s long list of high-profile clients. Recently, I covered the Select Committee on Governmental Oversight on educational foundations, the House Subcommittee on County & Regional Government on law enforcement pay, and the Higher Education Committee on allocating correct school funds for advisors and counselors. These few committees were just the start, and I was privileged to work inside the Texas State Capitol during a few hearings where I sat alongside tenured representatives. Overall, I am looking forward to finishing out this internship and gaining everything I possibly can about Texas policy as well as the lifelong connections I’ve already established.” —Enrique Lara

Through his internship, Brayden is gaining valuable hands-on experience in business communication, social media management, and leadership, while learning how managers communicate with employees and customers.

The B.S. in Applied Communication prepares students to apply communication skills, theories, training, and methods to social challenges, health contexts, science and technology companies, and social science fields.

Students also take interdisciplinary courses in science, math, humanities, professional skills, and research methods for STEM, preparing them for applied, STEM, and health careers.

💡 What will you learn?
Students gain practical knowledge for applied communication contexts in diverse industries and learn to solve communication challenges in real world situations, with a particular focus on health, science, and technology.

Students develop skills in interpersonal, organizational, health, analytical, and public contexts and learn to communicate ethically, collaboratively, and effectively on interdisciplinary teams.

Careers: community health, social service coordinator, market research analyst, science COMM specialist.

📚 45-hour major includes:
