"PT might not be the most important thing you do that day, but it is the most important thing you do every day in the United States Army. The bottom line is, wars are won between 6:30 and 9."

-Sergeant Major of the Army Daniel A. Dailey

Cadet meet and greet! This week, we will be showcasing current Cadets and former Cadets who have gone on to commission through the program here at CSUSM.

Cadet Sergeant Perez is currently a scholarship Cadet studying criminology and economics at Cal State San Marcos; she is on track to graduate in spring 2022. Upon graduating from CSUSM, she hopes to commission into the Active Duty component as a Military Intelligence Officer.

Why did you join the Army ROTC program?
“I joined ROTC because I have always had a passion for helping and defending others. My goal has always been to work for a federal law enforcement agency. ROTC provides me the opportunity to become a better leader, enhance my ability to not only defend our country but be the best soldier I can be.”

What are your tips for being a cadet?
“Maintain a workout, sleep, and homework schedule. Prioritizing has helped me tremendously when it comes to maintaining good grades. Being a Cadet gives me something to look forward to every day and it motivates me to be the best I can be on a day to day basis.”

What does leadership mean to you?
“Leadership to me means being able to motivate others, as well as always seeking continuous improvement. A good leader works with their team to benefit others and not just themselves. A good leader should also be a good listener and provide support for their peers.”

Cadet meet and greet! This week, we will be showcasing current Cadets and former Cadets who have gone on to commission through the program here at CSUSM.

Second Lieutenant Fang graduated from Cal State San Marcos in the spring of 2018 with a B.A in business administration. He is currently a platoon leader at E Co 578th BEB of the California National Guard as a finance officer. In the civilian sector, he is working as a marketing specialist and a real estate investor.

Why did you join the Army ROTC program?
“I joined ROTC because I wanted to find a way to challenge myself physically and mentally. I wanted to improve myself as a person as quickly and efficiently as I could. I saw that ROTC could provide that for me. I then enlisted as an infantryman to further the challenge and improve myself even. As an infantryman and as a cadet in ROTC, the biggest traits I took from both was resilience, where I know for a fact that no matter what comes my way and no matter how down I get pushed, I will always find my way back up and bounce back."

What tips do you have for balancing your cadet and student responsibilities?
“Write out your schedule to effectively time manage. I say that time management is the most important skill that you have to learn; juggling your academics, athletics, work, personal life, and the Army. Find out what’s most important to you and prioritize those things."

What is your leadership philosophy?
"Though all seven Army values are important, there are a few that I hold closer to my philosophy. I have zero tolerance for lack of loyalty, duty, respect, and integrity. Be loyal to your fellow soldiers, do your job as a team, respect one another, and do what is right legally and morally."

Why did you join the Army ROTC program?
“My desire to serve my country, being apart of something greater than myself, a thirst for adventure, and self-development.”

What is your key to balancing your cadet and student responsibilities?
“Having a clear understanding of your priorities and maintaining a reasonable standard for yourself.”

Leadership philosophy:
“Be empathetic and lead by example. I always try to inspire others to constantly improve themselves and develop others around them with clear and concise intent.”

Before You Commission, Read These 5 Books - From the Green Notebook 08/20/2019

A well-rounded collection of literature is key to the professional development of one's self and your organization.

“Thanks to my reading, I have never been caught flat-footed by any situation, never at a loss for how any problem has been addressed before. It doesn’t give me all the answers, but it lights what is often a dark path ahead.”

-Former Secretary of Defense Mattis
