The call for proposals for CALICO 2027 is now out (https://calico.org/calico-2027/).

That conference will be May 18th-22nd up in Fairbanks, Alaska (see map) and will be hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The CALICO conference has never been in Alaska before, and if you’ve never been to the Far North, this could be your chance! There will be enough hours of daylight to do everything you might want to do while there, since in summer Fairbanks is called the land of the Midnight Sun. It is at 64.8 degrees latitude (just barely below the Arctic Circle), so during the conference dates it will not get fully dark at all. The Explore Fairbanks (https://www.explorefairbanks.com/) website has a lot of info about that town and surrounding area.

📣 The Call for Proposals is open for CALICO 2027!

📆 Deadline: October 30th, 2026

We invite proposals for CALICO 2027 that engage with this year’s theme, “Languages in the Wild: Technology and Learning Beyond Walls,” and explore how language learning with technology happens across classrooms, communities, digital spaces, and the wider world.

This year’s theme encourages presenters to consider how CALL can support authentic, situated, mobile, immersive, and community-based language learning.

Possible thematic topics to be presented, discussed, and contemplated this year include, but are not limited to:

🔵 Language Across Places and Spaces: Connecting Place-Based Teaching, Technology, and Experiential Learning

Exploring how digital technologies can connect language learning to lived experience, such as community immersion and study abroad, expanding opportunities for meaningful interaction, collaboration, and engagement with local and remote communities and places.

🟦 Uncharted Territory, Trusted Compass: Exploring New Paths in CALL

Exploring and embracing uncertainty, productive risk, and new research, practice, and technologies, guided by expertise and collective wisdom in language teaching and learning.

🌀 Ancestral Voices: Indigenous and Community Languages in the Digital Age

Technology as a tool for language preservation, revitalization, and documentation, centering community-led approaches in Alaska and beyond.

🔹 Open Terrain: Access, Equity, and the Digital Landscape

Bridging barriers to language learning and to technology.

💙 The Northern Lights: A Nexus of Industry and Academia

Innovative research that brings academia and industry together.

Across these subthemes, we welcome proposals that examine mobile-assisted learning, AI, XR, gaming, geolocation, learner analytics, digital literacies, open educational resources, community-based research, multilingual learning ecologies, teacher development, assessment, corpus tools, online and hybrid learning, and other areas of CALL theory, research, and practice.

We welcome proposals from researchers, teachers, graduate students, instructional designers, program administrators, developers, and community and industry partners working across languages, contexts, and educational settings. CALICO 2027 especially encourages submissions that connect theory and practice, foreground diverse and community-based perspectives, and critically examine how technology can help language learning travel beyond walls into the wider world.

🏆 Congratulations to Dorothy Chun for her much deserved award and recognition as the CALICO 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient! 🥇 We are so honored and thankful for all that you have done for the CALICO Community! Thank you & congratulations!

Dorothy M. Chun received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in historical Germanic linguistics in 1982 but transitioned to the fields of second language acquisition and computer-assisted language learning shortly thereafter. From the start, she used technology in her research and teaching: in the 1980s, it was tape recorders for collecting her dissertation data on learning L2 intonation and then local area networked discussions for increasing the interactive competence of first-year L2 German students at the University of Texas at Austin. In the 1990s, she pivoted to developing multimedia applications for L2 reading and vocabulary acquisition and with a team conducted studies on selected cognitive processes in learning with multimedia at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In the 2000s, her book on discourse intonation in L2 informed by signal and acoustic analyses appeared, and she began leveraging Computer Mediated Communication for online exchanges (telecollaboration) to aid in the acquisition of L2 intercultural communicative competence, culminating in an edited book. Returning to the topic of her dissertation, in the 2010s she developed a mobile app to help speakers of non-tonal languages learn tonal languages by visualizing the pitch curves they produce and comparing them with the pitch curves of native speakers, contributing to the subfield of Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training. At the same time, she investigated the use of Augmented Reality in language learning, and most recently, in the 2020s, she has worked with different teams of colleagues researching the use of High-immersion Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence for L2 learning and teaching (resulting in an edited book on AI-mediated language education). From 2000-2025, she served as the Editor in Chief of the diamond open access online journal Language Learning & Technology. Becoming a Professor Emerita at UCSB in 2020 with over 100 published works (the majority with collaborators), she stays involved in research and mentoring and has been a proud member of the CALICO community for over three decades.
