CALICO It is a premier global association dedicated to computer-assisted language learning (CALL).

CALICO (Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium) is a recognized international clearinghouse and leader in computer-assisted learning and instruction. CALICO began mainly as a group of people interested in using and producing technology-based materials for second/foreign language teaching. After more than 25 years of growth and experience, CALICO now includes language educators, programm

ers, technicians, web page designers, CALL developers, CALL practitioners, and second language acquisition researchers--anyone interested in exploring the use of technology for language teaching and learning. Membership Benefits include reduced rates for the CALICO Journal, publications in the CALICO Book Series, attendance at CALICO's Annual Conferences, participation in CALICO's Special Interest Groups, and direct access to sister organizations and other organizations. The CALICO Journal, a thrice-yearly publication, is devoted to the dissemination of research on the use of technology in language learning. The CALICO Book Series produces an annual volume focusing on current themes in the profession. Recent titles include CALL in Limited Contexts, The Next Generation: Social Networking and Online Collaboration in Foreign Language Learning, and Opening Doors through Distance Language Education: Principles, Perspectives, and Practices. The CALICO Book Series responds to the information needs of language teachers, learners, and others who use educational technologies

CALICO's Annual Conferences provide a forum for discussions of state-of-the-art educational technology and its applications to teaching and learning languages. Each conference features preconference workshops, papers, software demonstrations, panels, and special interest group meetings for participants at all levels of expertise. Conference attendees have described CALICO's conferences as "an excellent opportunity to network with others in the field" and "a great friendly ambiance combined with solid work." CALICO's Special Interest Groups (SIGs) allow members to become involved in ways that are individually most meaningful and to network with other members who have similar interests. CALICO also provides a gateway to sister organizations such as EUROCALL, IALLT, and WorldCALL and serves as a portal to other organizations' activities such as the annual meeting of ACTFL.

๐Ÿ“ฃ An update for the CALICO Community!

To make it easier to stay connected with everything happening across CALICO, we are bringing the CALICO Journal social media accounts together with the official CALICO accounts.

Moving forward, this CALICO page will be your one-stop shop for everything CALICOโ€“ Journal articles, the CALICO Book Series, conference news, webinars, awards, SIG activities, Calls for Papers, member achievements, and more! No need to follow multiple accounts to stay up to date!

We will be making this change gradually over the next two months.

โฐ Please note: Starting September 30th, 2026, the CALICO Journal social media profiles will no longer be actively updated or monitored.

Make sure you are following us here, LinkedIn, and Instagram to stay connected. Our Instagram will remain the same, though you will notice a new profile name and branding:

Thank you for being part of the CALICO community! ๐Ÿ’™

Dorothy M. Chun received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in historical Germanic linguistics in 1982 but transitioned to the fields of second language acquisition and computer-assisted language learning shortly thereafter. From the start, she used technology in her research and teaching: in the 1980s, it was tape recorders for collecting her dissertation data on learning L2 intonation and then local area networked discussions for increasing the interactive competence of first-year L2 German students at the University of Texas at Austin. In the 1990s, she pivoted to developing multimedia applications for L2 reading and vocabulary acquisition and with a team conducted studies on selected cognitive processes in learning with multimedia at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In the 2000s, her book on discourse intonation in L2 informed by signal and acoustic analyses appeared, and she began leveraging Computer Mediated Communication for online exchanges (telecollaboration) to aid in the acquisition of L2 intercultural communicative competence, culminating in an edited book. Returning to the topic of her dissertation, in the 2010s she developed a mobile app to help speakers of non-tonal languages learn tonal languages by visualizing the pitch curves they produce and comparing them with the pitch curves of native speakers, contributing to the subfield of Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training. At the same time, she investigated the use of Augmented Reality in language learning, and most recently, in the 2020s, she has worked with different teams of colleagues researching the use of High-immersion Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence for L2 learning and teaching (resulting in an edited book on AI-mediated language education). From 2000-2025, she served as the Editor in Chief of the diamond open access online journal Language Learning & Technology. Becoming a Professor Emerita at UCSB in 2020 with over 100 published works (the majority with collaborators), she stays involved in research and mentoring and has been a proud member of the CALICO community for over three decades.

๐Ÿ“ฃ The date is set for CALICO 2027!

๐Ÿ“† Dates: May 18th-22nd, 2027

โœ… Save the date on your calendar and start planning now!

We are thrilled to share in co-hosting the conference with and at The University of Alaska Fairbanks, where we will explore the theme of โ€œLanguages in the Wild: Technology and Learning Beyond Wallsโ€.

The CALICO annual conference typically lasts five days, and consists of hands-on workshops, plenary speakers, regular paper sessions, poster sessions and tech demonstrations, special interest group meetings, our awards ceremony, and social events. We typically meet face to face, but there are options for online participation, too.

In order to continue best serving our CALICO community, we invite you to please take a short survey regarding your interest and attendance at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Find the 3-minute survey on CALICO 2027 at UAF in Fairbanks, Alaska (AK) here ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://lnkd.in/gJQerRER

Thank you for your time!

Stay tuned for more information regarding the conference, including the abstract submission deadline, hotel registration, and more.
