The most elite catchers in the game are operating like pitching coaches in their battery.

Honestly, I didn’t see this until a few years into my pro career.

My immediate reaction watching a catcher coach her pitcher like this was “Who do you think you are, you’re not a pitcher? How could you possibly know more than her?”

Then I started listening. Every piece of feedback she was giving, was something I could see as well. Every piece of feedback made of sense, and helped her pitcher adjust faster.

She wasn’t just correcting her pitcher; she was collaborating with her.

She was asking questions, and at the most basic level, telling her what she looked like so she could make an informed decision about her adjustments.

I now use this style of communication with every single pitcher I work with, and it’s completely transformed how I operate in the battery.

That being said, you have to go through the process of asking questions, and learning from each pitcher and building up your toolbox.

Be a student of the game. Send this to a catcher who needs it!

Most catchers think they understand what pitches are being thrown to them… but they don’t.

So many catchers come into my program wanting to read the ball out of the hand better, but tracking isn’t actually the problem they’re having.

It’s a softball IQ problem.

Each grip and release your pitcher has not only creates certain pitch behavior, but it’s also connected to different tendencies.

For example:
Underhand-released curve: If it’s going to miss, it tends to tail up.

Overhand-released curve: It’s more likely to miss down and, in my experience, is also more likely to cross you up and end up on the inside corner if it’s released too early.

Knowing these tendencies helps me mentally prepare before the pitch even comes in. I can anticipate how the ball is likely to move before it ever happens.

As a result, I can “track” the ball better out of the hand because I know what I’m looking for beyond just the general movement of the pitch.

Without this information, it’s like setting up middle as a catcher without knowing what pitch is coming.

That’s essentially what you’re doing if you’re not asking exactly what grip and release your pitcher is using—and then understanding how that affects the pitch.

Because just because two pitches are called the same thing doesn’t mean they’re actually the same pitch.

You can’t wait for the world to see your worth before you decide you have it.

This was the hardest thing for me to understand as a travel ball player.

When we’re constantly told to “earn your spot”, “execute or be pulled”, and “beat out your teammates” for play time, and ultimately, you start to think you’re only worth what you can do on the field.

A teenage athlete starts to believe she’s only as good as her last performance.

Tying her worth directly to last weekend of games.
Tying her worth to whether or not her coach sees her hard work.
Tying her worth to whether or not she starts over her teammate.

And then we wonder why some of the most elite level players are struggling with confidence.

It’s exhausting. How could they not?

My shift happened when I had no other choice but to believe I was the best I could be.

After my first season playing professionally, if I wanted to continue my softball career, I had to decide I was enough and whole heartedly go after the next opportunity.

I had to decide I deserved the job enough to ask for it.

If I didn’t, softball would be over.

This forced me to fundamentally change my identity and shift how I saw myself. I couldn’t wait for anyone else to hand my worth to me. I had to tell others who I believed I was, over and over again, to continue playing.

And it completely changed me.

My confidence didn’t just improve; my identity changed and was no longer tied to the ups and downs of on field ex*****on.

And honestly, softball is WAY more fun when I constantly get to learn, grow, challenge myself, perform to the best of my ability, all without fearing that one mistake was going to define me.

I’ve been able to finally play at my highest potential, all becuase I finally got out of my own way.

I didn’t even realize how much I played scared until I was finally able to play free.

Now, I help the catchers in my program do the same.

Because the only opinion of you that matters, is yours.

Send this to an athlete you know who needs it.

Premier Cup is so incredibly special.

It’s such a gift to compete with some of the greatest people I know. On nearly every team, there are players I know from one point or another in my professional career who have positively impacted my life.

It’s an international softball reunion that leaves me in awe every single year. I wouldn’t be who I am today without this community.

There’s so much more I could say to thank the athletes, coaches, umpires, field crew, photographers, and organizers who come together to make this happen every year, but overall, the overwhelming feeling is an incredible sense of gratitude.

EuroCup, we’ll see you next year🩷
