What is Lesson Study?
Lesson study is a form of professional learning that teachers use to deepen their understanding of student thinking. Public lesson study events are a common occurrence in Japan. A group of lesson study teachers, a research team, craft a lesson together to explore an aspect of student thinking – usually guided by a broad research question. (i.e. How can we facilitate rich mathematical discussions in our classrooms?) One member of the group teaches the lesson while the other teachers collect data on student thinking. The research team then share their findings during a debrief and discuss implications for student learning, future lessons, and what they learned about their research question. By making the process public it aligns with what we care about most at HTH - making student and teacher learning visible!
In a research lesson, the lesson is designed by the teacher research team and is considered the group's lesson (not an individual teacher's). However, one teacher ultimately teaches the lesson. Karen Underwood will be teaching the group's lesson for our public lesson study event.
About Karen Underwood
Karen has been teaching third grade for 4 years. She currently teaches third grade at High Tech Elementary, North County. Karen is extremely passionate about mathematics instruction in an elementary classroom and is always looking for innovative ways to improve her own instruction. She regularly leads math-focused professional development opportunities and is heavily involved in the Mathematical Agency Improvement Community- a network of 26 southern California schools focused on supporting student mathematical agency and success.
Sincerely,
The HTH Elementary Math Teacher Research Team

Hello Wonderful Families! HTeNC has been invited to participate in an exciting Citizen Science event called a BioBlitz at Cabrillo National Monument on Saturday, April 27th. This event is one of many happening around the county and country on the same day.
A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that live in a place.
The event is open to the public and they are expecting between 8,000 and 10,000 people. Normally, it costs $10 to enter the park, but we are being given FREE ENTRY as a group if we arrive on our own bus. Mrs. Lee is coordinating with Cabrillo to arrange for buses to transport families to and from the event.
This is an all day event! We will likely be leaving between 8:00 and 9:00 in the morning and returning around 3:00/3:30 in the afternoon.
If you are interested in joining us, please fill out this survey by Monday, April 15th, so we can provide an estimated number of participants and arrange for the buses.
We will follow up with more details to the interested families.
For more information on the event, see the following websites:

Thanks to our families and community partners, our Village Fest last year was a huge success, and we are able to host our 5th Annual Village Fest this spring!
This fun event will be Friday, April 26 and will bring together students, families, friends and teachers from HTH, HTM and HTe.
Your Parent Association is working hard to make it the best event ever. We are bringing back the fun zone & talent show, adding more food options and looking forward to game/activity booths from all three of our schools.
We are looking for community partners to help make Village Fest a success for our HTHNC schools. Here's how you can get involved!
You can donate a service or item representing your business, or an entire themed basket. Items valued at $100 or more will be added to our online bidding website that will be seen by all parents and family of HTH, HTM and HTe students! (All donations are tax deductible!)
Please email us at [email protected] by March 15th if you would like to participate. Thank you for your generosity and support!
