Have Fun and Be Safe on Halloween
Halloween is right around the corner, and Cal State San Marcos students will celebrate the holiday in many different ways.
But one thing that should remain constant is keeping yourself and other Cougars safe during what can be a chaotic time. To minimize frights and have fun with “spirit,” the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Dean of Students Office, along with campus partners, offer the following important tips for students to keep Halloween the safe, fun holiday it should be.

Be “spooktacularly” mindful – If you choose to participate in Halloween activities, we encourage you to think about the many cultures of our community and why they should not be used as costumes and themes. Some costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures or religions, and do not create a welcoming and inclusive environment. Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to groups of people. Also, keep in mind that social media posts, including on Instagram, TikTok and other platforms, can have a long-term impact on your personal and professional reputation.

Respectful and “fang-tastic” hosting – If you decide to host a Halloween gathering in your student housing, be considerate of your neighbors and roommates. Keep the noise level down and let them know about your plans in advance. Encourage your guests to be respectful of the community and your fellow residents. As a reminder, housing guests must also follow all campus policies, rules and regulations. You can find these guidelines in the CSUSM Standards for Student Conduct or the Resident Handbook. This weekend, you may also notice additional RAs and campus staff around our residential areas – their goal is to help maintain the sense of community and safety we all cherish.

Don’t “ghost” – stick with your friends – Go out with friends. Stay in a group and return home with that group. If a friend can’t walk home, don’t leave them alone. Walk in well-lit areas and check in with each other throughout the night. Remember that University Police is always available if you need help on or around campus. Call 911 in case of an emergency or 760-750-4567 if you need a safety es**rt.

Hocus pocus, don’t forget to focus on being an active bystander – Cougars look out for one another and help support our community's well-being. If you see something “skele-creepy,” interrupt a potentially harmful situation if it is safe to do so.

Watch your booze and brews – Only accept drinks from someone you trust and never leave your drink unattended.

As always, have fun, be safe and take care of each other. It’s the Cougar way

Fire Prevention Week 10/05/2022

Next week is the 100th anniversary of observing NFPA's Fire Prevention Week™. This year’s campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape”, focuses on simple but important actions everyone can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.

Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Getting out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning. See NFPA's Safety Action Plan

Fire Prevention Week Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week (FPW) has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
