Dipper, an ice cream parlor, and pulled himself
slowly, painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his
breath he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked kindly, “Crushed nuts?”

I had picked it up at a joke
session with 12-year-olds at school that week. This tradition has
been the highlight and has lasted more than 55 years.
I grew up in Pasadena, California, and I told my first joke
at the Sunday dinner table to my family and friends at age 10:
