Just IM THORPE: LIT BY LIGHTNING is streaming now on Netflix!!!

Our Director, Dr. Joely Proudfit, served as Consulting Producer on this film, and CICSC was proud to support some of the research behind it. It was an honor to help tell the real story of Jim Thorpe, one of the greatest athletes this country has ever known.
Directed by Chris Eyre and executive produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, this documentary only scratches the surface. Jim Thorpe's life was so spectacular, we honestly need a six part series to do it justice. He overcame loss, racism, and exploitation to become an Olympic champion, a pro athlete across three sports, and a founder of what became the NFL, and so much more.
Jim Thorpe was the GOAT.

The CA Tribal Chairpersons Association is excited to officially unveil the artwork and poster for the 59th Annual California Native American Day!

This year’s official artwork, created by Carl Avery Studios (Yurok Tribe), reflects the 2026 theme: “Inherent Sovereignty: Tribal Nations Fighting to Protect Our Land and Defend Our People.” We are honored to feature Carl’s powerful artwork as we prepare to gather in celebration of California Native American Day on September 25, 2026.

To help communities across California celebrate, Carl has generously made the official poster and a companion coloring page available as free downloads on his website (link in comments).

We encourage you to download, print, color, and share them with your families, classrooms, Tribal communities, and organizations as we recognize the enduring strength, resilience, and sovereignty of California Tribal Nations.

The American Indian Studies Department at CSU San Marcos is seeking faculty for Fall 2026!

A new course has been added: AIS 125 – Decolonizing the Narrative: American Indian and Indigenous Film and Filmmakers. This course will be offered online asynchronous, creating another opportunity for students to engage with Indigenous storytelling, film, and representation.

'Nar Rew Ekar. In Yurok, it means 'my beautiful beads.'

Shoshoni Hostler named her work after the material her mother placed in her hands during the hardest kind of waiting. Her mother was in the hospital. Shoshoni sat with the beads and found something she had not been looking for.

From grief grew an entire creative life.

Piper Proudfit, Payomkawichum and Tongva, is wearing Shoshoni's work here. Her current exhibit, Threads of Tradition, is on view now at the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center in Santa Rosa.

This is not costume. This is California Indian design moving forward, carried by the people born into it.
