So many of us normalize “losing it” as parents. We tell ourselves it’s just part of raising kids. And in some ways, it is—reactivity is human. But when that reaction feels intense, it’s usually not just about the moment—it’s about our history. I say this not as someone pointing fingers, but as someone who’s been there. My husband and I both carried unprocessed trauma into our parenting. And the truth is, our reactivity became a burden our kids had to carry. There’s research showing that when parents don’t own their pain, kids do. That’s why repair matters. Not perfection. Not ever “losing it” again. But coming back with honesty: “That was mine. I’m working on it. I’m sorry.” It’s taken time—and it came later than I wish—but I’ve seen firsthand how ownership changes everything. Our children don’t need us to be flawless. They need us to be accountable. That’s how the cycle breaks. Meet TJ! TJ is a second generation Filipino-American boy, and a proud kuya (older brother) to his baby sister. He's learning to speak Tagalog with his grandparents, and he is so proud when he gets to put it to use when his family comes to visit from California, where his parents are from. He loves it when they all get together so he can help his mom make lumpia with all the veggies he picked, and so he can play basketball and have a dance off with his cousins.
