The University Police Department (UPD) responded to a report of a burglary and indecent assault at Cypress Hall where an individual gained entry to a residential hall room through an unsecured door. Officers arrived on scene promptly, conducted an immediate search of the area and residence, and checked nearby locations. The suspect was not located.
This appears to have been an isolated incident. The investigation is active and ongoing.
We are sharing this information to protect members of the university community, promote safety, help reduce the likelihood of future crimes, and raise awareness of how to seek prompt assistance should a crime occur.

Description of Suspect:
Unknown Age dark complexion male, approximately 5’5” tall, slim build, wearing a dark bucket hat, no shoes or socks, and a dark blanket or cape wrapped around his shoulders.
No action or inaction by a crime victim makes that person responsible for another person’s abusive or criminal conduct. However, the following suggestions may help reduce the possibility of experiencing a crime or improve opportunities for prompt assistance.
1. Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy or sense something is wrong, do what you can to get out of that situation or call for assistance.
2. Safely intervene and call for help if you witness disrespectful or inappropriate behavior or a violent crime. Plan in advance: Discuss how you might do this in conversations with your friends, using different scenarios when you aren’t facing a potential crisis.
3. Contact UPD Community Engagement (512-245-2805) to learn various educational and awareness initiatives, including personal safety, property safety, alcohol awareness, drug awareness, impaired and distracted driving prevention, sexual assault prevention, and self-defense. Community Engagement collaborates with organizational development and communications to offer safety training courses to the campus community, including Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) and Standard Response Protocol.
4. If you feel unsafe, call 911.
5. Utilize transportation resources, such as Bobcat Safe Rides, 512-245-1689 or request a Code Maroon Ride, 512-245-2805.
6. If you feel threatened on campus or in nearby areas, look for a blue light emergency phone or call 911.
