New Research from the Healthy Kids Lab!

Our team has developed and tested a SmartBottle—a new device that automatically tracks how much milk an infant drinks from a bottle 🍼📊

This research is still in its infancy 👶 but is a great example of a student-led project that resulted in a practical, real-world solution! We're excited to conduct further research with this tech to see if it can help caregivers and researchers better understand infant feeding patterns, without the stress of manual tracking.

Meet the team!

“Hi everyone! My name is Karla Ceja, and I graduated from Cal Poly in 2021 with a bachelor’s in Public Health. I’m currently a research assistant on the iBaby study and project coordinator for Project Embrace at the Center for Health Research. My time here has allowed me to gain valuable hands-on experience in maternal and child health research, working closely with mothers and their infants as they grow during the first year of life. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Dr. Ventura’s research that examines the role of technology in shaping infant development during this crucial stage.”

Meet Iliana!

“Hi! My name is Iliana Treyger, and I am an incoming third-year Public Health student minoring in Biology. I have really enjoyed my Public Health classes so far, especially HLTH 298 (epidemiology), as they have all helped enhance my understanding of public health practices and how to address health disparities to ensure health equity. In the future, I want to get involved in the fields of pediatric nurse partitioning and healthcare administration as they both apply vital principles of public health to positively impact populations.  

I have really enjoyed being part of the Healthy Kids Lab throughout the past eight months because I have been involved in meaningful research that strives to understand how technology impacts caregiver-infant interactions and how that affects socio-emotional and cognitive development. ”
