Dear SLO Community,
It is sadly come to our attention that the President of the Board of Trustees of Cuesta College, Peter Sysak, has recently posted some grossly racially and socially inappropriate messages on his Facebook account. Some of these posts have been deleted. Nonetheless, it is quite apparent that such conduct is unacceptable and that he should be removed from office as quickly as possible. There will be an online meeting this November 4th, 2020 at 4:00 PM to discuss the issues at hand regarding his posts and how to move forward. We request your full support and involvement on these community issues.
Do keep in mind that Cuesta College recently was in danger of losing their accreditation. Most would say the college was hanging on a string. Hence, let's not disregard the multitude of both academic and administrative ailments that has plagued the school for some time now. The complaints we hear from students of struggles and dilemmas at that school is a mile high. On top of that, we have now exposed at the head of it all is an individual that should not be in the position that he was appointed to.
Again, we ask for help from the community to help rebuild and reshape Cuesta College from the ground up. This reconstruction will definitely require the help of the whole community as the reprocussions of both the racism and dysfunctionality have disseminated throughout the campus in many departments. This is a time for us to come together and work together to make this college operate at full capacity and give all students equal opportunity.

Communities of color at Cuesta College need our support to 1) pass an equitable anti-racism resolution and 2) because Board President Peter Sysak has posted several alarming and hate-filled posts, unbecoming of an elected official in the realm of higher education.
