As our Noyce seniors graduate, we’re excited to highlight Arianna Wilde, a Computer Science student focused on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and her senior project, BabyAlbums.

New parents take thousands of photos, but turning those memories into meaningful albums can be time-consuming and overwhelming. BabyAlbums uses AI to generate personalized photo book layouts that feel like a journey through a child’s milestones while remaining easy to customize.

By combining AI tools like Claude and Gemini with thoughtful design and extensive testing, Arianna created a platform that generates unique, handcrafted-feeling albums at scale. Her project demonstrates how AI can be used not just to automate tasks, but to help families preserve their stories in a more personal and meaningful way.

As AI continues to transform industries and reshape the way we learn, work, and create, important ethical questions must be part of the conversation. That’s why Weston Patrick, Student Director of the Cal Poly AI Ethics Lab, is helping lead interdisciplinary discussions on the ethical, legal, and social implications of emerging AI technologies.

Driven by a passion for both innovation and responsibility, Weston believes that meaningful AI ethics solutions must be grounded in strong technical understanding and practical feasibility. Through the AI Ethics Lab, he collaborates with students and faculty across disciplines to explore how AI impacts society and higher education.

Weston represented the lab at the Cal Poly AI Symposium, participating in both the Student Voices session and the “From Prompt to Practice” concurrent session. He shared insights from the lab’s partnership with the Academic Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Generative AI, including research on faculty perspectives and recommendations for student AI-use policies at Cal Poly.

We’re proud to celebrate Weston’s leadership, curiosity, and commitment to shaping a more thoughtful and responsible AI future.

Cal Poly students recently got a firsthand look at a live private 5G deployment at Paso Robles Municipal Airport through the Noyce School of Applied Computing’s Advanced Wireless Lab.

They worked alongside industry partners to see how next-generation wireless infrastructure is built and deployed in real environments supporting wildfire response, aviation systems, and future spaceport development.

Rethinking how we use AI.

We had the opportunity to hear from Hadley Wickham, a leader in the data science space, on the evolving role of AI in programming and problem-solving.

From comparing frontier models to exploring how LLMs are reshaping development workflows, the talk highlighted a key idea: it’s not about relying on one tool, but learning how to work across many.

Wickham emphasized that the real power of AI comes from going beyond simple chat interfaces and integrating models directly into coding environments, creating feedback loops, and using them to build, test, and iterate faster.

From turning raw data into structured datasets to enhancing productivity inside IDEs, AI is transforming how we approach data science and software development.

His advice: Stay adaptable, build real projects, and focus on solving problems that matter.
