Cal Poly’s newest materials engineering students started WOW with an unusual challenge: Build a shoe, then sell the idea.

Teams turned an assortment of materials into everything from breathable footwear to Cal Poly-inspired sneakers before pitching their creations “Shark Tank”-style to MATE faculty judges.

See how the annual competition gave first-year students an early taste of engineering while helping them connect with the MATE community.

Kevin Schindler (Industrial Engineering, ’73) and his wife, Vickie, support six scholarships in the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department, and 12 students have already received awards.

The couple plans to fully endow the scholarships so the awards can continue benefiting future students. Their support also extends to IME student research and senior projects.

For Kevin, returning to campus and meeting scholarship recipients has made that impact especially meaningful.

From age 7 to 77, museum guests stepped into a virtual space mission created by Cal Poly students.

Students in Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies and computer science are developing an immersive experience for the Aerospace Museum of California, where visitors repair a damaged space station and solve problems along the way.

The project is designed to keep evolving as new student teams build on the work, with the goal of becoming a permanent museum exhibit.

The Mechanical Engineering Discretionary-Fund Allocation Committee (MEDAC) helps turn student-identified needs into equipment that can serve students for years.

One proposal brought a heat-treating furnace to the Mustang ’60 machine shop, giving Cal Poly Racing students a way to manufacture and test components on campus.

Students also help evaluate MEDAC proposals for equipment, materials and projects that can benefit mechanical engineering students beyond a single team or project.

IME senior projects reached a new milestone in 2025-26, with the department’s largest student cohort to date completing 23 industry-sponsored projects with 16 partner organizations.

The projects connected manufacturing engineering and industrial engineering students with sponsors across California and beyond, giving teams practical experience addressing industry needs while helping organizations explore solutions they can use.
