The CSU data show that 59,004 people applied to be freshmen at the university, up from 54,609 the year before. And 9,005 people applied as transfers from another college or university, down from 10,905 last year.

As is suggested in this article, the SAT / ACT is one factor, but Elite also recommends taking challenging courses and participating in relevant and meaningful extracurricular activities.

Despite colleges dropping their testing requirements because of the coronavirus, students continue to sign up for the exams, believing that a score is the key to admission.

If high schoolers have learned anything during the pandemic, it's that college admissions is a numbers game. Applications for undergraduate admissions are up by at least 22% compared to pre-pandemic levels, according to Common App data, with students applying to more schools after seeing "how hard it was last year." But there's a catch: About 60% of applicants are from the extremely wealthy areas, while only 5% are from the lowest-income communities.

High school seniors are applying to many more colleges this year, if they can afford it.
