As we look ahead to the new school year, I want to take a moment to share an important update to our leadership team at Kathryn Newport Middle School.

After two impactful years as Assistant Principal, Mrs. Simmons will be leaving KNMS as she relocates to South Carolina. It has truly been an honor to work alongside her. From day one, Mrs. Simmons was a pivotal force in helping us open our school and lay a strong foundation for the culture and systems we have in place today. Her dedication, leadership, and care for students and staff alike will be deeply missed, and we wish her and her family the very best in this next chapter.

At the same time, we are excited to welcome Mr. Michael Quintana as our new Assistant Principal. Mr. Quintana joins us from Harvest Hill STEAM Academy, where he has served as a school counselor, supporting students through academic and behavioral challenges while leading schoolwide programs that develop positive culture and student success. He is known for his compassionate leadership, strong relationships with families and staff, and his deep commitment to middle school students.

We are confident he will bring great energy, heart, and experience to KNMS, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the Mustang family.

Please join me in wishing Mrs. Simmons well on her move and in giving a warm welcome to Mr. Quintana as he joins our team. Below is more information regarding the newest member of our Mustang family, Mr. Quintana:

Where did you attend school and do you have any specialized trainings that you have attended?
MA Clinical & Educational Counseling, Azusa Pacific University
BS Communication Disorders, California Baptist University
15 years in education (substitute teacher, paraeducator, speech pathologist assistant, counselor)

Why did you get into education?
I chose to go into education because of my experience as a student. School was a struggle, not just academically, but socially and behaviorally. I spent more time in the principal's office than in the classroom, barely scraped by, and honestly, almost didn't make it to graduation. But somewhere along the way, a few dedicated adults saw something in me that I couldn't see myself. They didn't give up. Turning my own path around showed me the incredible power of guidance, belief, and second chances. I went into education to be that person for the kids who are just like I was; the ones who need support, who feel misunderstood, and who are capable of so much more than their current struggles might suggest. I want to help them find their way, just like someone helped me find mine.

What do you love about your job?
What I love most about working in education is the privilege of witnessing growth. Every day, I get to connect with students, helping them navigate challenges, discover their strengths, and help plan for their future. There's immense satisfaction in seeing a student overcome an obstacle, clarify a goal, or simply realize their own potential. It's truly rewarding to be a trusted guide on their journey, celebrating their successes and supporting them through every step of their academic and personal development.

What did you do before joining KNMS and/or enter into education?
I have been working in MUSD as a counselor at Harvest Hill STEAM Academy since 2022. Prior to that I worked in TVUSD for 2 years as a counselor at a continuation high school/alternative education center.

What is your favorite food or snack?
Hawaiian Food. Movie theater popcorn with jalapeños.

What is your favorite drink?
Coke Zero and black coffee

What is your favorite hobby, sport, and/or sport's team?
Go Padres, Chargers, SDFC, LA Kings, Warriors! My wife and I love to travel and show the world to our 8 month old daughter.

Do you collect anything?
N/A
