Workshop Highlight: Liz Powers

Senses in Motion: Calming, Learning, and Growing Together

How can sensory experiences support children’s regulation, connection, and learning?

This workshop invites early childhood professionals into a practical conversation about how sensory experiences can help children manage stress, emotions, and behavior while creating calmer, more connected learning environments.

Participants will explore how early brain development influences children’s responses to stress and emotion. Then translate that knowledge into simple, low-cost sensory materials and routines that can be used right away. The workshop will also consider strategies for supporting children with disabilities, children impacted by trauma, children experiencing intense emotions, and children simply having a hard day.

Grounded in Learning Stories, the session will explore how documenting sensory experiences can reframe behavior as communication, highlight children’s strengths, and deepen belonging. Educators will practice capturing moments of regulation, resilience, and growth so that children and families can see narratives of capability and resistance rather than deficit.

Poppa Jim Comes to Kindergarten: Kindness in a Relational Learning Community

“He aha te mea nui o te ao. He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.”
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

In this workshop, Karen Ramsey shares the unfolding story of an intergenerational friendship between Poppa Jim and a kindergarten community, where everyday acts of kindness grew, were noticed, and became part of the learning environment.

Grounded in Te Whāriki and the principle of Ngā Hononga/Relationships, the workshop explores how responsive and reciprocal relationships can strengthen belonging, learning, and community. Through Learning Stories and Collaborative Community Stories, Karen will also explore how narrative documentation can honor children’s mana, illuminate their learning dispositions, and celebrate their identities as learners.
