In elementary math, a child may memorize that 3/4 = 0.75 without understanding what the numbers represent. Ask them to use a visual model or explain their reasoning, and unfinished learning may become visible.

When a Grades 3–5 student gives up on a multi-step problem, it may not be a motivation issue. Working memory can hold only so much at once. Long directions and several steps can overload it.

Try this at home:
1. Write down the steps.
2. Cover all but one step.
3. Use scratch paper for the numbers.
4. Read the directions twice.

It may describe:
• Decoding: difficulty reading unfamiliar words
• Fluency: slow, choppy, or inaccurate reading
• Vocabulary: gaps in word meanings
• Comprehension: reading the words but missing the meaning
• Writing: difficulty organizing or expressing ideas

Each skill needs a different plan.
