This past Saturday, we hosted a Rain Barrel Workshop at our Educational Garden, and what a great day it was! A big thank you to Master Gardener Kim Garcia for leading the workshop and sharing the many benefits of harvesting rainwater.

Attendees learned how rain barrels can help conserve water, reduce runoff, and provide a sustainable source of irrigation for gardens and landscapes. We had rain barrels available for purchase which is perfect timing with the rainy weather forecasted for this week!

Of course, no garden event would be complete without a special guest appearance from our garden cat, Gigi, who happily joined in on the fun and supervised the workshop activities.

The garden has been especially busy lately with all the recent rain. Our volunteers have been hard at work keeping up with maintenance and are currently refreshing our Butterfly Garden and Native Plant Garden. Thank you to our wonderful Master Gardeners for their dedication, hard work, and for always making garden work enjoyable!

In honor of National Volunteer Month, a proclamation was presented today at Hidalgo County Commissioners Court recognizing the dedication and service of Hidalgo County AgriLife Extension Volunteers. This special acknowledgment highlights the meaningful impact volunteers make in strengthening our community through education, outreach, and stewardship.

During the court session, we also had the honor of recognizing an outstanding individual who has devoted two decades of service as a Texas Master Gardener. Congratulations to Sylvia Casselman for 20 years of commitment, passion, and generosity in sharing her knowledge and time. Her contributions have helped cultivate not only gardens, but also a stronger, more connected community.

Volunteering is at the heart of what we do—giving back, inspiring others, and creating lasting change. We are grateful for each and every volunteer who continues to make a difference.

Happy National Volunteer Month to all our wonderful Hidalgo Texas Master Gardeners! 🌱
