Just in case y'all wanna look up the DVD I referenced. And maybe look up the Martial Artist I spoke of too. Stephen K. Hayes is also a very good writer too. Many many books about martial arts. You may not realize what his specialty is but I'll tip you off.... he is a Ninja! He traveled to Japan in the 70's and trained under Masaaki Hatsumi founder of Bujinkan. His schools here in the US teach To-shin Do, a modernized version of Ninjitsu. Togakure-ryū is a more traditional style of Ninjitsu.
*Anywho, I have posted about the "American Ninja" movie series welp this is the real American Ninja yo, I still am a of Michael Dudikoff as Joe Armstrong and Steve James (rest in paradise) aka Action Jackson! (Uhhh they were the main actors & their character names in American Ninja 🥷 duh)

:Hanbō
•Is a staff used in martial arts. Traditionally, the hanbō is three shakus or 3' long, 1/2 the length of a Bo staff (6') aka the Rokushakubō. Diameters vary but usually just below an inch (.945") or right above it (1.18")
○Why do I speak of Hanbō? Where did I come to know the weapon, hanbō? What wood are those hanbōs made of? And why do you have "black tips" on the bottom of the pictured hanbōs?
●Welp, The hanbō can be held toward one end and can be swung like a katana or kendo sword. It can be held in the middle like a bo; strike & block from either end. The hanbō can be used for striking, restraining or even throwing someone. It's useful to know because sticks are more readily available and can be picked up if you're attacked.
●Masaaki Hatsumi says that one who wishes to be a swordsman should first master hanbō techniques since it can be held and utilized similarly to a Japanese sword (but without the cutting edge). When utilized properly (parrying by deflecting the sword by striking the flat parts of the blade), it can be used against a katana. ●Stephen K. Hayes had a DVD called "Hanbo & Baton Variations" I remember that was where I first learned about the hanbō. It's super cool and teaches you how to use a Maglite flashlight as a baton!
●But more closely to my roots in Escrima, I have read books that explain "Largo Mano" literal meaning "Long Hand" or long-range utilizing distance. It's more like fencing in that aspect. But the hanbō was like the Largo Mano Baston but longer. Same principles though, in Escrima you are always conscious of where the "blade" side would be. Yes, we train sticks to mimic a bladed weapon. Also there is Hanbōjutsu, which is the art of wielding the hanbō. For me the importance of using the Hanbō is length. 3ft is the general length of a walking cane. So hence the black "rubber tips". Those are for medical cane replacement but I added them to my hanbōs to make them street appropriate. Folks will see the cane look and automatically assume it's medical not for defensive purposes. I can walk on the streets; no problem.

** And just in case I cannot remember all of the lessons taught to me by my Instrutors & Mestres, I have references in my literature. Pictured are my investment into the language of Brazilian Portuguese. We sing in B.P., the movements are in B.P. the Mestres & Instrutores are from Brasil so for communication and understanding it's best to relearn and apply my Brazilian Portuguese. I let rest my Ilocano is stopped when my Nana passed, I could answer her back in English but I understood her. I learned Spanish and that wasn't used with Native speakers so I lost that language too. Overall I should be tri-lingual but I did not keep practice. So here's to relearning & reapplying again. -Superhomen

The window for today's event is closing; just like yesterday & the week's workshops just gone. I want to be there, I want my son to be there. It's rare I get him the same weekend that I have an event. Batizados & Troca de Cordas are a big deal in a Capoeristas life. It's a party, it's maybe your 1st cordao (cord or our version of a belt), you get Baptised to our Familia. The jogador receives their appelido (nickname) I like calling it my bandito nome. When it was outlawed in Brasil, alot of "gang" members, street thugs really, would use Capoeira in an assassin type of way. Holding straight razors in their toes they would fight trying to ultimately slice their opponents throats. Silk scarves we're used to mask & guard the neck. As the Bandito would fight & kill more the darker red his scarf would become. Hence why our Mestre level is Vermehlo (Red). I had a death in our close family friends last night. I also had my B.I.L into the hospital. So much is stacked up against me being there today so I am hearing you God above. This week & today isn't in the cards. But I am there in spirit, heart and soul. My heart beats to the atabaque for y'all Santa Cruz Familia! I dunno what else to say except I am sorry. I am tired of being the "Holiday Catholic" Capoerista. I don't want to just shoe up for events once yearly. I just want to train again, I want to teach again, I want to joga! Eu quero viver! Eu quero prosperar! .oficial

Welp that's the way the cookie crumbles, it's amazing how fast goes by. I felt like life has blurred by me since diagnosis of my mental health. I did that route of self-medication and that helped to numb & played as my remote controller, I pressed FastFoward & just kept skipping chapters. Since 2002 I have trained Capoeira with Raizes do Brasil Capoeira. I began in Union City under my Professor . He was the one to take me to Santa Cruz and it was there was metastasized. .oficial saw me play & he said if Kal-el landed in Brasil instead of Smallville he would've played Capoeira & he'd play like I did. Since 2002 I have listened to with on the mic! I bought his CD's every time I could. When they played locally to me, I went too. When I was local to them, in Santa Cruz like tonight I would get tickets, have some bevvies and dance the night away. 99% of those times we'd do a right there in the club, lights flashin' sweated ground & crowd & everyone cheered and clapped along... The band goes on at 8p. I can't attend tonight. Life happens & I had to be here to support my B.I.L. who was in the Hospital last night til just an hour ago. Yes my heart & body would like to be there tonight but again that's the cookie crumbling. Alrighty, I am relistening to the catalog that I have. Not sure where the CD's are but glad it's on my Amazon Playlists. Still fingers crossed I get to the Batizado tomorrow. All my love to my Raizes familia & my Santa Cruz fam. Happy Birthday to Amêndoa, (I hope I spelled that right) Happy Bday Wish I could be there...

Yes, yes again I am plugging the Netflix Series "Sanctuary"
One actor I would like to highlight isn't necessarily the main characters storyline but his story runs congruently with the main and maybe considered the main antagonist. Hiroki Sumi plays Shizūchi, Who is a low-ranking sumo wrestler from the Kōku stable. He has a bright future but is also perceived as a monster because of his strength and the scar on his face. This guy doesn't even speak throughout the series but his role was the most impactful to me. Yes, I will post prolly about the main sumo, Enno, but my gawd. is a beast & his past life is welp heartbreaking & so sad. Again **trigger warnings** when watching particularly his storyline Mental Health & Su***de are part of his backstory & I am not trying to spoil anything for you just want a preparation there just in case. I relived some traumas and had to stop a few times to catch my heart so yeah.
