Pilots are invited to join Jack Trieger and other Air Traffic Controllers who will present a safety briefing on operations at the Reid Hillview Airport. The presentation will help pilots be more aware of safety concerns at the airport and thereby operate safely while on the surface and in the air. The briefing will cover the following topics as well as provide a time for Q&A with the controllers:

Light rail work will temporarily impact access to RHV from Capitol Expressway. The Capitol & Cunningham intersection will be closed Oct. 13–17 for train bridge installation.

Please follow detour signs and access Reid-Hillview Airport via Tully & Swift or Ocala & John Montgomery Dr.

The City of San José will be giving Cunningham Avenue a fresh new look! Work runs from Tully Rd. to the airport terminal entrance with the following schedule:

Sept 25 (night): Old asphalt removal

Sept 28 (night): New paving + overlay

Following weeks: Utility adjustments & fresh striping 🎉

✅ Airport access will stay open with flaggers guiding traffic, though brief delays are possible.

There was a tragic incident that occurred on August 26v involving an aircraft rented from Trade Winds Aviation. The NTSB investigation is ongoing and Trade Winds is fully cooperating. Since the incident there has been rampant speculation as to the cause. This is a difficult situation for the family of the pilot, our employees, and our Members. Until yesterday we have not been able to make any public comments, and we understand the frustration by many with the lack of communication. Please read below our statement on this incident.

Statement on Recent Aviation Accident and Ongoing Investigation

We are deeply saddened to confirm that a fatal aviation incident occurred on August 26, involving a privately operated Cessna 172S departing from Reid Hillview Airport at approximately 3:10pm local time. Tragically, the pilot—who was the sole occupant of the aircraft—did not survive.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the individual during this incredibly difficult time. We are working closely with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), who are leading a thorough investigation into the incident.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, there has been public speculation suggesting mechanical failure. At this time, we urge the public and media to refrain from drawing conclusions while the official investigation is underway.

While we will not discuss specifics pending the findings of investigators, we are aware that early indications point to factors unrelated to mechanical malfunction. We are fully cooperating with the authorities as they examine all aspects of this tragic event, including the possibility of intentional actions by the pilot.

As always, safety remains our highest priority, and we stand with our partners in aviation and law enforcement as they work to uncover the facts.

Jul 4 Drone Show at Lake Cunningham next to RHV!

The City of San José moved quickly to secure a drone light show for Friday’s celebration at Lake Cunningham Park, replacing the previously planned fireworks display. This will be the first Fourth of July drone show in the City’s history and will begin at 9 p.m. The event will also feature live music, family-friendly activities, and more than 15 food vendors, creating a fun and safe way for the community to celebrate Independence Day. The event organizers have been coordinating with the FAA and a NOTAM will be issued.

The organizers will be limited to 450 feet and will call the tower 1 hour before the show starts and then 10 minutes before the show starts, then one last time when at the all clear after the show.

Tomorrow evening, RHV Tower will be hosting a pilot briefing. This is an opportunity for pilots, student pilots, CFI and other Airport users to engage with local ATC to gain perspective and insights.

Aviation Career Discovery Day is almost here!

This event is in collaboration with San Jose State University’s students, faculty, Career Center and Department of Aviation and Technology.

It will be a full day of interactive and education sessions from guest speakers discussing next generation technologies and the direction of aviation along with networking, Resource Fair, Mentoring and Relationship Building.

We will celebrate the people and innovation that propel aviation’s tireless push to greater altitudes. This daylong event is a chance for students to learn, network and be inspired by aviation professionals from Northern California.

The NCBAA, in collaboration with the students and staff with the Career Center and Department of Aviation and Technology, strives to generate community interest in aviation by raising awareness of aviation careers, trends and issues in our industry.
