Many Veterans donโ€™t realize that migraines can be secondary to service-connected depression.

You donโ€™t necessarily need headaches documented during service. If your depression causes or aggravates your migraines, they may qualify as a secondary condition. Migraines can be rated up to 50%, which may impact your overall VA rating.

If you are currently suffering from frequent headaches alongside your mental health condition, start keeping a headache log and talk to your doctor about getting a formal diagnosis.

Schedule a free 30-minute call if you want to break down how secondary service connection works for your specific case. Link is in the comments:

For over a century, the Marine Forces Reserve has remained ready to answer the call.
Today, we recognize the Marines who balance service, family, careers, and the commitment to remain prepared whenever needed.
Happy Birthday to the Marine Forces Reserve. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
Thank you for continuing the legacy of service and dedication.

This is one of the single most common points of confusion for Veterans. While both are monthly tax-free VA checks, they have completely different rulebooks.

Hereโ€™s the simple breakdown:

VA Disability Compensation

Who itโ€™s for - Veterans with injuries or illnesses tied directly to military service.
Key Requirement - Must prove a service connection.
Financial Limits - None. It is not income-basedโ€”your earnings won't reduce your payout.

VA Pension
Who itโ€™s for - Low-income wartime Veterans who are 65+ or permanently disabled (even if unrelated to service).
Key Requirement - Served during an official wartime period + financial need.
Financial Limits - Yes. It is a means-tested benefit based on income and assets.
The Bottom Line - Disability pays for service-connected injuries; Pension supports wartime Veterans facing financial hardship.

A lot of Veterans are unsure if their current rating truly reflects their condition.

Sometimes the challenge isnโ€™t the condition itself. Itโ€™s understanding the evidence, the process, and what the VA looks for.

A quick conversation can help bring clarity to where you stand and what options may be available.

Think every medical diagnosis automatically gets a VA disability rating? Not quite.

Itโ€™s frustrating to see a condition in your medical records that the VA marks as "unratable." But understanding why this happens is the key to building a stronger claim!

Hereโ€™s what you need to know:

Why Some Conditions Don't Get Rated:
No Separate Diagnostic Code - The VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD) doesn't have a distinct code for it.
Symptom, Not a Cause - Chronic pain or high lab numbers (like cholesterol) are often viewed as symptoms of a primary condition rather than standalone disabilities.
Pyramiding Rules - To avoid "double-dipping," the VA won't rate the exact same symptom under two different diagnostic codes.

Don't let an "unratable" label discourage you! Often, that symptom can be wrapped into a primary condition or claimed as a secondary issue with the right medical evidence.

Think a 100% VA disability rating only happens one way?

Many Veterans donโ€™t realize there are different paths to reach a 100% rating.

These can include:
100% schedular rating
TDIU
Temporary 100% rating
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
Other qualifying situations

Each has different requirements and eligibility factors.

Understand the different types and what makes each one unique.

One thing many Veterans overlook during the claims process?

Keeping track of how their condition affects everyday life.
A symptom journal can help you remember important details like frequency, severity, and how symptoms impact work, sleep, or daily activities.
Itโ€™s a simple habit that can help you better explain your experience.
