Recommendation on how to use a better thinking process when you play in tournaments:
1) Use the CCTv Rule
Look for Checks, captures, and threats.

2) Always look to counterattack
If your opponent attacks, look for threats of your own.

3) Your least active piece
If no tactics are available, improve your worst-placed piece.

4) Fischer's Golden Rule
If one of your opponent’s pieces is active in your position
and creating threats, deal with it first.

5) Anti-blunder check
And before every move, check their threats

I hope this alone will save you from many unnecessary losses.

It is not necessary to calculate everything. You just need a clear system that helps you find strong moves without wasting extra energy.
