I’ve always respected and loved the fight world. I never gravitated toward World Series games or Super Bowl games or really any other sporting event. Not that I don’t enjoy them but that atheltic fascination of sport never hit me like the fight world did. As a kid I genuinely got pumped for fight nights. I’d sit quietly in awe when Julio Cesar Chavez fought or Oscar De La Hoya walked into that ring. I remember vividly that Tyson rematch with Holyfield and that cemented my interest in the world.



It also helped that my older brother devoted his life to the fight world and helped introduce my younger brother and I to a whole other realm in jiu jitsu and MMA. And it was in studying and watching the fights as well as listening to stories of his adventures and friends in that world that cemented my interest and respect for that life.



I have but a handful of favorite fighters. But one easily has always been at the top of my list (besides my brother of course) and that is . On one level I always dug how he is well spoken and maintains a level, or aura if you will, of respect and admiration from those around him even opponents. When my brother started teaching at El Nino and i’d make quiet appearances there i’d observe Gil and what I saw was a man who runs a business. Who trains to fight others. Who has a family. Who helps shepard and teach others in this world. When you observe an individual like that you can’t help but admire and respect that individual. And then there is UFC 166. Thats one of the best battles in fight history in my opinion, the kind of action and energy you see in Hollywood films was on display that night. That battle showed to the world what I always was a fan of... heart. Melendez has heart on another level. I love film and I love the Rocky series. To me Gilbert Melendez is a real life Rocky. Hardest worker in the room and he isn’t stopping.
