Kate Loewen- "I just recently came upon some old home videos of my 10-year-old self practicing a news broadcast with the video camera my parents bought me at a young age. I loved presenting and storytelling-- I even had a toy that was a mini radio DJ mixer. It hacked radio waves for FM 88.3 up to two houses down my street! When I went to SJSU I had forgotten all of those things, but the rigor and practice within the JMC program allowed me to find those old roots of passion for the very thing I aim to do as an adult in my career. I'm finally graduating and I am extremely lucky to say that I still love my academic focus. Thank you Mom and Dad; you gave me the tools, opportunity and encouragement I needed to follow my dreams. Here I go!!"

Lauren Hailey- "I've grown up in San Jose my whole life, and was pretty sheltered. I never thought I'd be able to express myself in any way, so when I first started to write, it was like a refreshing experience that I could, in fact, find an outlet to be myself. I found what I loved and I worked for it. I work hard. Even after having a child at the young age of seventeen, I kept my studies going and I worked hard to achieve the goal I set out for myself, and be able to provide a good example for my daughter. As a single mom, balancing work, school, and raising a child through college from diapers to kindergarten, I was able to complete internship after internship, and land a spot as a contributing writer on an up-and-coming Bay Area online lifestyle magazine called TYTEMedia. I've even gotten to interview artists an musicians. That's exactly what I want to do, and I'm loving every minute of it! I've honed my skills as a writer and learned other multimedia skills that have already helped me in my career. I've started my own music blog website, misslaurenhailey.com. In addition I've gotten to talk to and make connections with some of my idols in the field of journalism, including Billboard editor-in-cheif Danyel Smith. I tell myself that I did all these things because sometimes I can't believe it. People like me aren't supposed to succeed. I can take a step back and see all that I've accomplished so far, and be confident that it is only the beginning of a beautiful career. Thank you so much, JMC, for everything you've done."

Jacqueline Orvis- "From San Diego but without a bona fide “hometown,” I’ve been in the Bay Area since 2004. After traveling around the States in my late teens/early twenties, I really only happened to land here by chance, fitting right in with the outdoor crowd like I’d been here all my life. When I came back to California, I moved from Chicago to Arnold, Ca. Quite a change, right? I spent a season working at a ski resort before moving to the South Bay to pursue an education in storytelling. In fact, I chose San Jose State University because there was a sign for it on the interstate. Little did I know then that I would become a proud Spartan and that San Jose State would lead me to my dream life.
SJSU has given me opportunities to put my degree to work before it’s in my hands. As the science communications intern at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, a position made possible by my work at the Spartan Daily, I turn complex science into popular reads for the Monterey Bay and San Jose community. MLML is the CSU system marine science department for seven universities including SJSU. Graduate students and professors from SJSU are leading contributors to the breadth of the marine science disciplines. As part of the Friends of MLML, I sum up the hard work of the scientists into news releases so the community can keep up to date with the contributions to the marine science world.
Furthermore, I’m happy to announce my second year as an assistant event manager of the annual Bay Area Maker Faire, a massive science faire hosted by Maker Media. Formally O’Reilly Media, Maker Media is a prominent Sebastopol, Calif., company built from the ground to scourer the sky as the global platform for “makers” of all degrees and disciplines with a do-it-yourself mindset. I love working for a major media company, and I really lucked out by getting a foot in with Maker Media. With my training from JMC, I can really amaze my supervisors with skills and experiences beyond what I was originally hired to do – check in vendors at events.
Without my time at SJSU, I would not be where I am today: happy, educated prepared for whichever master’s program, fellowship or career choice I chose. And from the looks of it, I am already getting my choice of careers before I even move my tassel from the left side over to the right."
