🚴♂️ Carbon Bike Safety Check After a Car vs. Bike Incident
A rider brought in this beautiful TIME carbon road bike after being hit by a car. Thankfully, the rider only suffered a few bumps and bruises—but whenever a carbon bike is involved in an impact, a thorough inspection is essential.
Many people ask if there’s a machine that can tell if carbon is damaged. While there are advanced inspection methods used by manufacturers, most bike shops don’t have access to specialized equipment like industrial imaging. That means the inspection relies on experience, careful observation, and systematic testing.
Here’s what I checked:
✔️ Complete safety and bolt inspection
✔️ Carbon tap test, listening for changes in sound that could indicate internal damage
✔️ Close inspection for paint chips, cracks, or hairline fractures that could suggest carbon damage underneath
✔️ Careful test ride to listen and feel for unusual noises, flex, or vibration
The good news? The frame, fork, and handlebars all passed the inspection with no signs of structural damage.
The bad news? The rear wheel wasn’t so lucky. It had a significant dent at the braking surface that could be felt every time the brakes were applied. Damage like that can’t be safely repaired, so the correct solution is to replace the wheel and transfer the tire, cassette, and other components to the new wheel.
Incidents like this are a great reminder: after any crash—even one that seems minor—don’t assume your bike is safe to ride. A careful inspection can catch problems before they become dangerous.
