Recently, a potential member contacted my club using the find-a-club function. I (as President of my club) and my club's VPE both contacted this person. She responded with "Wow, your club is really on top of it." She had also contacted one other club which never responded to her. She is now a member of my club.

Another problem is, quite frankly, that some clubs just don't have their act together. They do not plan their meetings in advance and end up scrambling at the beginning of the meetings trying to fill roles and pull their meeting together at the last minute. Then, as the meeting proceeds, participants struggle with knowing who is doing what because there is no written/printed agenda. How do you think a prospective new member will view this club compared to a club that has everything planned in advance and that executes a tight professional looking meeting?

Another thing that I have noticed over the last couple of years is that a lot of people are tired of online meetings. Before my club transitioned back to in-person/hybrid meetings, we received many inquiries from potential new members who said "I am not looking for another online meeting." This drove us to find a new physical meeting location.

Many clubs are afraid to try to close the deal. They thank a visitor for attending the meeting but make no further effort to convert the visitor to a new member. The best time to close the deal is right there at the end of the meeting. Talk to them after the meeting and ask them about their goals. Reinforce the idea that your club can help them achieve their goals and offer to sign them up right then and there.

You might ask: So, Jeff, how has your club done recruiting new members this year? My club has actually signed up 15 new members this year. If my club can do it, yours can do it too.
