When the nation’s transportation system faced an unprecedented crisis on September 11, 2001, Genie Norris Murphy was serving as Senior Advisor to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta.

In the days that followed, she remained closely involved in the Department’s response, traveling to New York as Secretary Mineta’s on-site representative at Ground Zero. Her service that day and afterward earned her the Transportation 9/11 Medal.

On September 11, 2001, flight attendants were on the front lines of an attack that would forever change aviation. For Sara Nelson, advocating for aviation’s front line responders has defined her career.

As International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, Sara represents 55,000 flight attendants at 20 airlines. A United flight attendant since 1996, she has also been a leading voice on aviation safety and security throughout her career.

On September 9, Sara will be a part of the historic Mineta Forum on Transportation Policy & Leadership to bring the frontline perspective of flight attendants to a conversation marking 25 years since 9/11—and looking at how we continue to keep our skies safe.

On September 10, 2001, Captain Wendy Morse flew a United Airlines 767 from Newark to San Francisco—the same route United Flight 93 was scheduled to fly the next morning before it was hijacked and crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Twenty-five years later, Capt. Morse continues working to make aviation safer through her leadership with Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l including advocating for secondary flightdeck barriers on commercial aircraft.

On September 9, Captain Morse will be part of the critical conversations at the Mineta Forum on Transportation Policy & Leadership, bringing a pilot’s perspective to the discussion about September 11 and the work of strengthening aviation security in the years since.

What does transportation leadership look like across administrations, across political lines, and across generations?

The Honorable Rodney E. Slater, 13th U.S. Secretary of Transportation, joins us at the Mineta Forum on Transportation Policy & Leadership to reflect on the legacy of Secretary Norman Y. Mineta and the lessons he shared which continue to guide transportation’s future.

Serving under President Bill Clinton, Secretary Slater advanced landmark investments, including the Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment Reform Act for the 21st Century (AIR-21) which provided $46 billion to strengthen the nation’s aviation system. Before joining the Cabinet, he served as Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration. Today, he is a partner at Squire Patton Boggs, advising on transportation, infrastructure, and public policy.

John Flaherty built a transportation career from the ground up, starting as a cab driver in San Francisco and ramp serviceman at United Airlines. He rose to leadership roles at the nation’s capital, becoming a staffer for Members of Congress and Chief of Staff for Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta—including during the events of 9/11.

Now, he is joining us as a speaker at the Mineta Forum on Transportation Policy & Leadership this September. The event will be emceed by Karen E. Philbrick, PhD, Executive Director of the Mineta Transportation Institute.

Following 9/11, Flaherty represented transportation leadership in the National Security Council’s Counterterrorism Security Group, working alongside senior representatives from Defense, Justice, State, the FBI, CIA, and other federal agencies to coordinate national counterterrorism policy and operations. Flaherty has also led infrastructure teams in Iraq and Afghanistan, served as a principal at a major private equity firm, and led a graduate program at Carnegie Mellon University as a Distinguished Service Professor.
