Did you know that volunteering for MEF not only helps others but is also good for you? Research consistently shows that volunteering contributes to better physical and mental well-being, making it a win-win for both MEF volunteers and the Moreland community.
ππ³π
According to Jeffrey Burr, a professor of gerontology at UMass Boston, volunteering has positive effects on overall well-being. Studies have shown that volunteers experience less depression, anxiety, and higher self-esteem, among other benefits. These findings highlight the profound impact that volunteering can have on mental health.
ππ³π
Additionally, volunteering has been linked to improved physical health. Research conducted by Carnegie Mellon University found that older adults who volunteer regularly experience better overall health and a reduced risk of conditions like high blood pressure. The act of volunteering itself often involves physical activity, promoting movement and well-being.
ππ³π
At MEF, we believe in the power of volunteering to make a difference in our Moreland community. Whether you're interested in supporting enrichment programs, events, or fundraising efforts, there's a volunteer opportunity for you. Join us in creating positive change and making a meaningful impact in the lives of our incredible staff and talented students.
ππ³π
If you're ready to experience the benefits of volunteering and make a difference in your community, we invite you to explore volunteer opportunities with MEF. Email [email protected] for more information on how you can get involved today!

Today's small grant spotlight shines a light on Latimer School middle school teacher Holly Brown!
ππ³π
Holly used her small grant award to purchase Android tablets and protective cases for a new zero period elective, opening up a world of possibilities for her students.
ππ³π
With these resources in hand, Holly launched "App Creators," a Project Lead the Way program where students learn to design, create, and code their own mobile applications. The course goes beyond basic coding skills; it introduces students to the field of computer science and the concepts of computational thinking.
ππ³π
In βApp Creatorsβ, students are challenged to be creative and innovative as they collaborate to develop mobile solutions to real-world problems. The class emphasizes the positive impact of computer science on society, particularly in fields like biomedical science. Through hands-on projects, students see firsthand how technology can be used to address pressing issues in their communities.
ππ³π
By empowering her students to become app creators, Holly is not only preparing them for future careers in technology but also instilling in them a sense of agency and creativity. Through βApp Creatorsβ, students at Latimer Middle School are learning to harness the power of technology to make a positive impact on the world around them.
