Here in the US, this week is Thanksgiving. If you're like us, you were taught that the first Thanksgiving was a day of gratitude and a harvest festival, where Pilgrims and Indigenous Americans celebrated together. This isn't true. Giving thanks and feasting with loved ones are wonderful practices that we fully support, but as you do so, please take some time to learn the full history behind our Thanksgiving mythology. While you're at it, visit https://native-land.ca/ and learn about the people whose lands you live on. As you enjoy your stuffing, please also think about the larger context of this day and the role we can each play in reconciliation. If you're still reading, please take a moment to learn about voluntary land taxes and see if you have an opportunity to contribute.
The Politics of Thanksgiving Day - Zinn Education Project
By William Loren Katz With family excitement building with the approach of Thanksgiving, you would never know November was Native American History Month. President Obama had publicly announced the month, but many more Americans will be paying attention to his announcement of Thanksgiving.
