SJSU Bands

SJSU Bands Welcome to the official page of San José State University's Band program! Students will sight-read and perform a prepared piece.

Directed by Dr. David Vickerman, the SJSU Bands is comprised of the finest woodwind, brass, and percussion students in the School of Music and Dance. Dr. Vickerman consistently seeks to expose his students and audiences to the highest quality of music written for wind instruments, ranging from Renaissance masters to the most recent prizewinning composers. Through the rehearsal and performance of a

diverse repertoire, students are exposed to a wide variety of compositional techniques, rehearsal processes and expressive possibilities. The Wind Ensemble programs are performed in both the fall and spring semesters. In addition to four on-campus concerts, the Wind Ensemble regularly tours throughout California and the Western states, and has regularly performed at the California Music Educators State Conference and at the College Band Directors National Conference. Music Majors focusing on classical performance must participate in either Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band as a major ensemble. Auditions are held at the beginning of each semesterj and are open to all majors. Their performance level will determine their chair placement and whether they participate in Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band. Instruments are available to students who pay the $30 use fee each semester. Scholarship awards are based upon performance level and the needs of the School. There is no additional cost to the student for local and regional band travel and tours.

The nomination form for the 2026 SJSU Honors Wind Ensemble Program is LIVE!!!

This ensemble is designed for high school musicians who are highly motivated by musical curiosity and want to challenge themselves in a high-level musical environment. Especially those considering pursuing a career in music education or performance. The SJSU Honors Wind Ensemble also brings together dedicated musicians who are ready to perform advanced repertoire, collaborate with other skilled musicians, and grow both technically and artistically.

🚨🚨 CALLING ALL SJSU MARCHING BAND ALUMNI: Registration is NOW OPEN for the 2026 SJSU Homecoming Alumni Band! Join us for a halftime performance with the SJSU Spartan Marching Band, as well as cheering on our Spartans in the stands!

Homecoming: Friday, October 9, 6 PM
Register by September 25 to guarantee music and event registration.

Please join us in welcoming Chandler Beck to the SJSU Bands team as our inaugural Administrative Support Coordinator! Chandler is a freelance musician here in the Bay Area, and proud alumnus of San José State where he served as principal horn of the Wind Ensemble, New Music Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Brass Ensemble.

In this new role, Chandler will serve as the primary administrative contact for the Concert and Athletic Bands, coordinating administrative operations, event and travel logistics, student support services, purchasing activities, and more! Welcome Chandler!!!
